Which is best, 9.04 or the current 9.10? I'm inclined to go with the current for 12 core smp. Right now I'm on 8 cores with a TPF of 27:15.

i would go 9.04 for 12 cores, i have slower TPF on the 9.10. but i have not try the newer kernal yet, so i can not tell u, if they improve the performmance on the newer 2.6.33.2 kernal.

Version 10 may need a glibc fix. Some users on folding forum were unable to get the folding client / core to start properly with the beta. I built a fixed experimental glibc for lucid a while back that makes it so the client / core can start without issues.

Yes it worked for me to fix this issue with v10. However, the last build I tried of Lucid was back in January, which I believe was Alpha 2. I will try and grab beta 2 this evening or tomorrow to see if the issue is still present and test out the fixed glibc build with the latest version.

Governator Thanks LR, beta 2? I have parts coming in soon for new bigadv builds. Beta 2 is the latest Ubuntu available currently. How many bigadv rigs are you building? What kind of processors?

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 this evening. It looks like the same error occurs with the folding core as before with symbol __rawmemchr not defined in libnss_files.so.2. libnss_files.so.2 is a glibc file. My glibc build that I built for my Slackware64 systems and virtual images seems to be working fine with a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 beta 2. I have the folding client running without the above error. I can post the commands that I used to install this fixed glibc for the folding core. However, I would only suggest installing this glibc build on non-production systems that are freshly installed and do not have any important software on them. Most everything in Linux depends on glibc and if something goes wrong with the glibc install, it likely will prevent successful boot of the Linux system and may require a reinstall of Linux. Keep in mind if something goes wrong, an Ubuntu reinstall may be necessary. Open a terminal and run these commands: cd /tmp wget http://www.linuxforge.net...olibs-2.11.1-lucid.tgz cd / sudo tar xf /tmp/glibc-solibs-2.11.1-lucid.tgz sudo sh install/doinst.sh Do a system reboot to make sure the Linux system still boots okay and then try and start the folding client.

Question, why not use Gentoo or something else that's more lightweight but still uses the most recent kernel? Ubuntu has loads of stuff loaded up in the background (particularly with the desktop version) and while you can gut some of the stuff running it might just be easier to run a server distro or roll your own. All I think you need running is network, ssh (if you want it), and the libs for fah. You might be able to shave off some time with those modifications (Rationale being that less bg tasks = less interrupts = faster folding)
