This is a repost from the old forums for referencing PhysX performance, I have no intention of continuing to update this thread.

Instructions:

First off, just wanted to get this out of the way early, this is for people who already own a GTX 200 or another Nvidia GeForce card and are interested in PhysX in their games.  Please keep any crying and bickering about PhysX being Nvidia only and not being supported on AMD/ATI etc out of this thread.

For those that didn't know, Batman Arkham Asylum full retail version launched today in the US.  I installed my copy today and was playing around a bit and found a very cool new feature that wasn't included in the Demo version.  The full retail version includes a built-in benchmark that does a very good job of featuring the differences in hardware PhysX.

Part I: Update your PhysX Drivers and Patch the Game:

1.  Make sure you are running the latest PhysX driver version: http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx_9.09.0814.html

2.  SLI users make sure to get the latest SLI patch: [link=http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_multigpu_SLI_profile_update_v2.html]http://www.nvidia.com/obj...profile_update_v2.html[/link]

3.  Patch the Game to Vers 1.1 to enable hardware PhysX.  Steam versions will most likely autopatch, boxed versions can update from within the game using GFWL:
  • Hit HOME key at the menu, this brings up the GFWL overlay
  • If you are offline or not signed in, go ahead and Sign In.  If you don't have an account, you may need to create one, it takes about 5 minutes.
  • When you try to Sign In to go Online, you may have to hit Try Again once or twice because you don't have a valid GFLW key attached.
  • This will prompt for a CD-Key, which you can enter now.  Its on the back of your manual.
  • Once entered, GFWL will tell you a TU is available (Title Update) and ask if you want to download.  Choose YES.
  • This takes awhile.....like 10 minutes.  I hate this part of GFWL, it keeps the game open while it downloads and I'm pretty sure its doing a filecheck on your install.  Your HDD will go nuts and CPU utilization will be maxed too (55% on my Core i7 with HT, which is like 110% with HT off heh).  I'm sure some of that is from the game client running, but not all of it.
  • Once done, it will kick you to desktop, then ask if you want to run the update.  Installshield will then start up again and ask if you want to run the TU which enables PhysX.  Choose yes, a few times, then the update will install and then the launcher will come up again.
  • You'll see the same PhysX options at the bottom as were in the Demo.

4.  Run the Launcher (right-click from Games folder, choose Launcher) and click on Settings.  This will allow you to choose resolution, detail settings, AA and PhysX setting at the very bottom.  The settings will not apply until you actually run the game.

Part II. Disable Vsync and Framerate Smoothing:

You can skip this part if you don't care about maximum FPS and just want to see differences in PhysX level and performance.  Multi-GPU users will probably want to do this or the 60 FPS cap will result in very little gain from their extra cards.

1. Turn off Vsync from the Launcher, can also force it off from the Nvidia Control Panel

2. Navigate to %:\Users\[YourPCname]\Documents\Eidos\Batman Arkham Asylum\BmGame\Config

3. Open up BmEngine with any text editor like Wordpad.  If you totally mess it up, just delete it and run the Launcher, it'll make a new one with default settings for you.

4. Look for bSmoothFrameRate with Find (Ctrl-F) and change to False (can keep this True too, just make sure to increase Max).  Change Max to something higher than you think your max would be with your video cards, I put 250.  Copy those 3 lines by right-clicking and choosing "Copy".   Once finished, Save and Exit.

5.  Now find and open UserEngine.ini located in the same directory as BmEngine.ini.  Paste the 3 lines you copied in Step 4.  Once finished, Save and Exit.

You can also delete those lines in the red box, if you want to skip the intro movies.   I also turned that multithreadedshadercompile option to True although I'm not sure it helps at all.  There's plenty of other tricks and tips for the UE3.0, but they're beyond the scope of this post.

Part III. Run the Game and Benchmark

1. Run the Game, start a new save slot.  You need to get through the initial cut scenes and intro, then press start to get to the in-game menu.

2.  Choose Benchmark, which will run the benchmark with your current settings.  At the end of the benchmark run you'll get a result screen, which you can screenshot using FRAPs or Precision (if you have SS enabled).  You can also hit PRINTSCRN button but you'll have to Ctrl-V into Paint or similar program later.

3.  To compare PhysX settings, features and performance, just change the PhysX settings from the Launcher like you would normally.  The changes made to the UserEngine.ini will override any changes done normally by the Launcher, so SmoothFrameRate will always be off.

Quick tip on Image Quality:
I don't want to cover this in too much detail here, but also be sure to enable Transparency Anti-Aliasing in this game via the Nvidia Control Panel.  It makes a vast difference in image quality with the heavy use of gratings, railings, windows etc.  You're much better off keeping AA at 4xMSAA and enabling TrSSAA instead of just cranking up AA to the max from the game's launcher.

The in-game benchmark does a great job of showing the differences between the 3 PhysX settings.  You can see all the different settings for the paper, fog/steam, flags, and cob webs.  It doesn't show some of the cooler effects like destructible environments but it gives you a good idea of what kind of performance hit is involved when enabling those features.

So, lets see some of your PhysX results!
