EVGA reached out to us last night...

They are asking for a new/updated/current guide for our folding team.

It will be used to replace this one here... http://www.evga.com/folding/guides.asp

The idea is... Create a thread... Build it, be open to suggestions from the membership, critique it, and once finalized let us know. We will then get Shane to update the page mentioned above.

So who will be the brave one?

Are they looking for just screenshots and text or would a video be allowed as well?

I'm certainly on board for this!    I suppose it gives me a reason to finally install the v7 client...

Should we have the different options for installing? (i.e. v6, FAH Tracker, v7)  Or, should we only be focussing this on the current release (v7)?

It is best to just stick with the most current/stable version. Once folks get that figured out then they can start learning more about other options/tweaks.

    I would suggest v7

get away from v6 & tracker which has no upgrade path or future support

I'm willing to help in whatever way I can/is needed. Although, I know just enough to get in to trouble.

Also, while I loved Tracker, I agree that we should focus on V7.

Do we want to use the Stanford instructions as a base point and figure out where improvements can be made?

Heck, if it works out, maybe I can suggest through the DAB that adoption of an improved version could be used by Stanford.

How about if we start posting our own screen shots and someone can piece the guide together from the best graphics. The problem is that i don't really remember how I set up V7 because I was having an incompatibility issue with the non-Fermi card.

Would be good to include an HFM setup guide for v7. While v7 can have all the info via FAHcontrol HFM is still nice for monitoring multiple machines.

I'm sure we can have one, but not necessarily for the EVGA Folding page. HFM is more for those who get hooked and want to do more, so they should be comming here to the forums at that point. The guide that EVGA would have as their official one would likely just start with the basic setup with key points for ensuring a clean install. Then there would be a link pointing the the forums for additional info, help, etc.

I'd be glad to try and work something up by myself or with a helper.
But I'd like a private or hidden space/thread to work in until the finished post was done.
Here on the forum would be preferred so Admins & Mods could look into & make suggestions.
To many post to such a work thread might make things more confusing  for the author.
This should also work better for who ever may take on the chore.
Just a suggestion that should help the author.

    Re:Official request... 2012/12/14 14:54:13 (permalink)
Here is my first attempt at an updated guide (feedback encouraged):

    1. Download the Folding at Home installer.
      • Windows version can be found here.
      • All other versions found here.
    2. Run the installer.
    3. Agree to the Terms and Conditions and select Express Install.
    4. On the next screen, input the your information.
      • Donor: Your desired Folding At Home User name (to get your stats to work properly on EVGA's website make it the same as your EVGA Forum name)
      • Team: EVGA's Folding Team is is 111065.
      • Passkey: Allows you to get bonus points for returning a work unit quickly.  You can obtain your unique passkey here.
      • Preferred Mode: Select between CPU and GPU folding.
      1. Uniprocessor requirements are:
        • Windows XP or newer
        • Intel PIII-450 processor or newer, or AMD equivalent
      1. SMP requirements are:
        1. Windows XP or newer
        2. 2 or more CPU cores
          • Dual cores of a more recent CPU architecture and/or higher clock speeds
          • Multiple cores and/or multiple sockets of an older CPU architecture
        3. Client running at or close to 24/7 to meet shorter deadlines
      2. GPU requirements are:
        • Windows XP or newer
        • 1 or more supported GPU video cards
        • ATI/AMD
          • (GPU3 - OpenCL - fahcore_16)
            • OpenCL compatible GPU, 5xxx series or newer, see full list
            • 11.4 AMD device driver or newer
        • NVIDIA
          • CUDA supported GPU (8xxx series and above), see full list
          • 26x.xx NV device driver or newer (285.xx and 301.xx are known stable versions)
        • Client running more than part time to meet shorter deadlines
      1. Install and then start the Folding at Home client.
      2. Congratulations!  You should now be up and running.  You can access the Folding at Home Console window to track your progress, find out more information about the projects you are working on, or adjust your settings.  Simply find the icon in your task bar, or in your start menu under Programs > FAH Client > FAHControl.
      3. Keep in mind both the CPU and GPU based programs will tax your system. Please keep a close eye on your system temperatures while folding. These programs are automatically configured to be run in the background without affecting performance much, but you may notice performance decreases while gaming, so EVGA does not recommend running these programs during gaming or other heavy-load scenarios.
      4. For additional information or questions on the Folding at Home project, visit the distributed computing section of EVGA's Forums here.

I would add to 4. at the end something about ways to optimize your system also. So people know that that setup may not be getting them the most points possible without adding unnecessary stuff to the guide.

Troy - Looking good.  I started to put something together as well.  Feel free to give a look and pull anything you think may be useful.  Also, anyone else out there - feel free to give it a once over as well.  If you can't access it, let me know and I'll try and update it when I get home tonight.
