Holy crap!  This is really cool stuff.  I got one of these new acer 27 inch 3d screens, and I am tempted to get 2 more for surround, but I have a question.  I was goofing off with Portal 2.  In 2D, the FPS were like 300 LOL.  In 3D they stayed at 60.  Does 3D have to render in 60 FPS, or is that literally the FPS hit you take?  Would my system even be able to handle 3d surround?

I think it is required to be at 60FPS because the 3D itself needs 60(or 120Hz).  Any higher FPS wouldn't do you any good

Re:I just witnessed Nvidia 3D in my house for the first time 2011/07/12 16:24:39 (permalink)
In 3D you are forced to play with v-sync on. This is done to make it easier to sync the frames with the shutter glasses to give you the 3D illusion. Your monitors is a 120hz screen and that means 120fps, but in 3D because every frame is rendered twice (one for the left eye and one for the right) this is cut down to 60fps that you perceive. So while it is still technically running at 120fps, you're only seeing in 60fps because of the double draw for every frame.

Your system would be able to handle 3D Surround in most games just fine. Only games like Metro 2033 or the DX11 patch and high rest texture patch for Crysis 2 will you have to dial down some settings to keep it fluid.

Surround is great, but there are a couple of hang ups. Most notable is the glasses you have to use. They are (at least it was for me) extremely uncomfortable to wear for any extended period of time. And the other is ghosting. Ghosting is most prominent in areas of high contrast like if you're in a dark area and there is a light in the distance, you'll see the light and then a ghost image of the light right next to it. This is caused by the LCD not being able to switch the pixel from completely on (white) to completely off (black) fast enough to keep in perfect sync with the shutter glasses. This results in a residual image in the frame for the other eye causing the "ghost image".

My advice is to play around with the games with your single 3D monitor for a bit and see if you can overlook the quirks of 3D before you jump all in with the purchase of 2 more monitors.

Been playin with it now for about three hours.  It's amazing.  Some games are perfect (Portal 2, MW2, Crysis 2) and other are less then perfect...... but the real shock and awe is in 2d mode frankly.  Looks like 120 hz makes a difference.  I had to change it in my windows properties and the difference was obvious.  Looks like my u3011's are going to the marketplace.  Can't believe I just typed that.

Trust me, give it a couple of days before you make the final decision. I did the same thing about a year ago. I was all blown away by the novelty of 3D gaming and thought it was so good that I decided to jump into it head first. But as time wore on and I got tired of having to put on the 3D glasses and the discomfort from them I found myself just playing in 2D most of the time. Which of course defeated the purpose of spending the money on the 3D monitors.

3D shouldn't hurt your eyes but it may give you a headache.  At worse you should only get tired eyes.

Ghosting on the new acer 27 is minimal. Built in emitter is so easy, just click power  button and you're good to go.

Staring at monitor or TV screen is bad for your eyes. Personally, I don't care. Glasses or Lasik will take care of it.

That is actually not true.  A computer or TV screen will NOT harm your vision at all.  The only thing it does is cause eye strain which can cause temporary blurriness or headache, dry eyes... nothing major or permanent at all.  It isn't like you are staring at the sun here.

Frankly if it damaged our eyes we would all be blind by now.  Computers and TVs are not new at all.

    I agree with you.

I was being sarcastic about TV and monitors. I know some people concern about 3D and eyesight. I believe 3D is just as bad for us as much as microwave, radio wave, magnetic field, the sun, the moon etc.. you get the idea.

I believe it is sort of a gimmick that will fade just as it has in years past.  I don't see 3D as mainstream until it ditches the glasses and looks good without giving people headaches because eventually that just becomes a huge burden.

When the monitor technology does start producing good glasses free 3d results I will be very interested in where the technology goes.  It will truly be a great day for porn... I mean gaming.

I am aware.  It just isn't very mainstream yet.  You have an annoying 3DS and the phone which I am entirely unsure of.  When we see this technology from our PCs I think it will be a great day.

Congrats!  I just ordered the new Acer 27" 3D monitor to replace my current Alienware 23" screen.  I was trying to decide on going with 3 AW2310 monitors for surround, or just going with the single 27".  I opted for the single Acer 27" after much thought, and finance considerations.  I think the 27" will be enough of an immersive experience for me.  The Alienware 23" monitor is definately good, but 27" 3D monitors weren't available then, and that's what I really wanted.

Well after playing around with this I have made a decision to get three of the Acers, and keep 1 of my Dell's.  The main thing I miss on the the 30's is the ability to play non-surround games like SC2.  I have to say, these are some damn nice screens, and the 120hz in 2d makes a difference.  The 3d is also really cool.  I played the bridge part of HL2.  OMG.

I'd go for ASUS or Dell/Alienware 3D monitors instead... they tend to have better picture quality from my experience.

Note that these new Acer 27" 3D monitors have a LED backlit display, unlike the smaller Asus and Alienware 3D monitors.  From what I've read so far, this new Acer doesn't have the edge bleeding of the non-LED backlit displays.  Mine should arrive next week, so I can actually confirm that then.

This is the best TN panel I have ever seen.  It's no IPS, but it's pretty close.  This blows away my Asus 27 inch monitor I had prior to the Dell's.

It does need calibration though....  and I am a little nervous about three of them.  They all have emitters so I hope it works in surround.

    Update:
3 work in surround no problem.  I have to say, Crap, the 3d thing is still cool to me, but I see what you mean.  But here is the thing.  2d surround is f'n ****en at 120HZ.  The difference is very obvious to me.  I sold my Dell's, made about 3400, paid about 1900 for these, so tbh, I'm glad I did it.  I'll keep these until we see some 120hz 30 inch panels.

on that note, played with the HTC evo 3d and got a head ach pretty damn quick which doesn't really happen with glasses 3d for me.
also it only really works if your holding it at the right distance and the right angle and i don't think i will be getting one now.

No doubt the 3D is cool, but like I said my main annoyance was the glasses themselves. They are so cumbersome and uncomfortable that I stopped using them.

The fit doesn't bother me so much, it's the asthetics of it.  Combine the glasses with a g930 headset and I'm embarassed to have even my wife see me.
