Welcome to the Chimp Challenge 2011
For all those new to it, the Chimp Challenge (CC for further reference) is an annual competition between the world`s top folding teams. So far start off has always been May 5th, 12 noon  PST. It started out as a small competition between sub teams from MaxPc  and  Overclockers, which both have money themed sub teams, and has grown over the years. The winning team is allowed to display the jaded monkey (and only the winning team).

Main target for this annual madness is to raise awareness for folding, bringing in new folders by spamming other sections of the forum, get some retired folders back into the fold, and last not least having some fun!

This will be our third run in it. The first time we came in second behind OCN, and last year we´ve been able to turn this around and win the jaded monkey.

This thread is meant to get us started and keep you guys up to date on developments.  Please excuse if I don´t post everything that´s  still in discussion until things have been set in stone. I will keep you in the line on the general direction things are moving though.

Also do we keep EVGApes as name, or  a new one?
I´d prefer to have only one monkey in the top ranks, to spare a spot for all those that have worked/folded hard to get here.

A special first kudos goes to rjbelans who stepped down from the poll on who becomes team captain.
Another one goes to troy for starting the process and the poll (albeit a short one).
Last not least one goes out to Drougnor for already stepping and doing our stats. I´ll provide him with the details once I know them myself.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rules are considered official now. Still discussing what is considered "foul play" as in rule number 6
So here they are:
1. Each team will fold for the duration of the contest.
A "Chimp Points" system will be used to determine the placings.
The total points of each parent team is taken from the months of October 2010 to February 2011.
One-tenth of a percent (0.1%) of the respective team's 5-month total will be the points required to earn one (1) Chimp Point.
The team with the most Chimp Points earned at the finish time/date will be declared the winner.
EVGA -                            2,189,017,921 5-month total          2,189,018 = 1 Chimp Point
Overclock.net -                 1,103,027,683 5-month total          1,103,028 = 1 Chimp Point
Overclockers.com -              687,521,160 5-month total             687,521 = 1 Chimp Point
Maximum PC Magazine -      598,691,922 5-month total             598,692 = 1 Chimp Point
TSC! Russia -                      740,887,400 5-month total             740,887 = 1 Chimp Point
CustomPC & BitTech -          653,039,005 5-month total             653,039 = 1 Chimp Point
Overclockers Australia -        241,621,336 5-month total             241,621 = 1 Chimp Point
TechPowerUp! -                   217,346,120 5-month total             217,346 = 1 Chimp Point
Hardware Canucks Forum -   232,244,119 5-month total             301,917 = 1 Chimp Point

2. Start time for the contest is Thursday, May 5th at 12pm, Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7).
The finish for the contest is Sunday, May 15th at 12pm, Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7).

3. The victor gets to claim the lucky jaded monkey as the prize.
Tales have been told of untold wealth and fame that comes with this.
The victorious team is allowed to display in any honorary fashion the jaded monkey, the losing teams are forbidden to display it.
The losing teams are bestowed the dreaded monkey's paw, which is said to be cursed.
People have been known for have very bad luck with this paw!

4. Team captains are as follows:
OCF - Captain: David
MaxPC - Captain: Full_Taoer
OCAU - Captain: leroyxx
OCN - Captain: zodac
EVGA - Captain: Barbarossa17
CPC & bit-tech - Captain: coolamasta
Hardware Canuks - Captain: chriskwarren
TSC! Russia - Captain: Hil
Tech Power Up - Captain: BUCK NASTY

5. In the event of a close race, a Stanford daily_user_summary.txt file will be the official source for points information.

6. Only team captains are allowed to make changes to rules and will be looking out for any "foul play".
We should not do anything that hurts the folding project. This includes but is not limited to, priming WUs and installing clients on machines without proper permission.
Starting wus before the start of the CC is fine, but stopping clients just so that a wu drops after the start is considered bad folding conduct.
Also having a machine idle after the change of names for longer than necessary just so that the next wu drops within the first few hours is discouraged.
If a team is found out doing this they may be disqulified from this years and next years Chimp Challenge. So try to keep your clients as close to their "natural flow" as possible. I´ll change over my smp/bigadv clients already a couple of days early.

7. The official folding names are:
OCF - T32monkeys
MaxPC - maximum_monkey
OCAU - Monkey_Bollocks
OCN - OCNChimpin
EVGA - EVGApes
CPC & bit-tech - Custom Bit Chimps (without the spaces, had to write it this way due to censorship from the forum software)
Hardware Canuks - Beavers_Gone_Bananas
TSC! Russia - TSCh!mp
Tech Power Up - ChimPowerUp

and most importantly
8. Have fun and keep it positive
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The official stats will be hosted by HWC again this year.

and our own stats courtesy of drougnor and troy8d can be found here

I want to participate, how do I go about it? Very easy
-If you´re already folding for team EVGA, all you have to do is change your username to EVGApes. Now if you´re also folding    smp/bigadv, see the further info below.
- If you´re already folding ,but for a different team and want to help us (thanky you, very much appreciated), change your username to EVGApes and team number to 111065.
- I´m completely new to folding, but still want to help. The fastest and easiest way to get folding is Jedi95´s gpu tracker.
Have a look in here: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=219556 ***(Fixed link AB)*** and use EVGApes as username and 111065 as team number.
You can sign up for the cc here!
Note: even if you don´t sign up, you can still participate by following the steps above
and you can find a list of registered participants here!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To get the bonus points for your smp clients (regular and bigadv), you´ll need a passkey. You can either use your own (but have to qualify it again for EVGApes) or one of our pre-primed, so that you get bonus points right away. Everybody that still has one from last years Chimp Challenge, you´re good to go, those are still good.
Please contact one of the following persons to get your copy of the passkey:
Punchy
mflanaga
AcesofDeath7
Rjbelans
and myself
Keep in mind to start your smp/bigadv in time, so that we come out the gate full swing, and don´t have to catch up speed later.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
jflankford is providing is with some nice CC badges again this year:

and

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have good news for those who want to participate, but  are afraid of missing their targets for EVGA´s folding promotion (taken from an e-mail)
ShaneD
As for interference with the EVGA bucks promo, my offer still stands from last year. If a folder has historically hit milestones, but misses one of those by an approximate amount of points that is close to 10 days worth of folding, we will honor those milestones. It’s a bit of a gray area, but for example if someone historically hits the first milestone, and not the second we won’t be giving out the second for those that ask.

With all that said, lets kick some monkey butt, and show them we´re still the best team out there and can win this in a clean fight!

I agree with you on keeping EVGApes as the name for the same reason.  Like seeing EVGApes on top of the Chimp Challenge leaderboard, but like seeing hard working Folders at the top of our own leaderboard.

I think the Trophy should be available to ALL Team EVGA folders. Whether they competed or not.

In the CC we are representing Team EVGA, All of us.
Again, JIMO, YMMV

I like haveing the ape in the badge, But I have heard that at the end of the term, if we do not win again the picture will change. Not sure if that is true or not, see folding badge below.

So far the winning team has been the one, that reached a certain goal first (last year it was 20 million points for all teams).  I have yet to get access to the captains forum and join the discussion, but from what I´ve seen so far this will change.

In my opinion this is very bad.  It is my understanding that the Chimp Challenge started as a means to definitively prove who was the best folding team.  In setting handicaps, it will no longer fill that role.  Sure, it is nice for everyone to have a shot at winning but if you win a handicapped contest it doesn't say much about your team's folding prowess.

To win such a contest the optimal strategy would be to under-produce as a team for the months leading up to the CC and then bring a ton of hardware online for the CC.  That is not something I support as it goes against the reason we're all here and you're not proving anything but your ability to manipulate the system.  The other factor that comes into play is team participation rate (i.e. who can get more folders to switch to their CC name for the duration of the contest).  With a history of high stakes bragging rights, this is not a great contest concept.

If the CC is really to declare the "best folding team" for that year, I feel that any type of handicapped contest is no where near as exciting nor accurate as the previous format.  Am I missing something here?  Has the rest of the field conceded defeat before its begun?

Your last sentence pretty much sums it up.
The main problem is, that we (and OCN to a degree) so heavily outproduce the other teams.
Already after the last one, some teams have been debating on whether they should participate or not.

Well then, let's put the word out for an 'un'handicapped contest and Boycott this year. I feel for the teams that need handicapped. Let them have the CC. I feel it's a waste to BE the best and get beaten because of handicapp. I have no problem with losing a contest, but if it's Inter-team. Let the best team fold unencumbered

I'm cool with whatever we decide to do.  I just think it is not the same contest and does not carry the same (if any) clout if it is altered in such a manner.

What if there were different divisions that teams could compete in?  My understanding is that last year was a runaway and the only battle was between EVGA and OCN.  As long as there are two team fighting it out, we still have a meaningful contest.  If other teams don't think they can hang, let them compete in a separate division.  Or, if they were so inclined, they could form an alliance in an attempt to take down the top teams.

@Troy,
Separate classes are fine with me.
Alliances would be no better than handicapping. If they want to merge as one team, that's different. They compete under the "conglomerate" Teamname and number. IMO.

What would be wrong with categories, and/or divisions. The best team should still win of course. But they could also award a Miss congeniality, and a good sport trophy, In my opinion this is too much like Kids playing T-Ball, and not keeping score, or doing away with grades, so the kids that don't apply themselves, don't loose self confidence. I would say that these kids will not be prepared, for the future, but, if the future is a Entitlement system, where excellence is not rewarded, and everyone gets the same regardless, of effort, and commitment, then this is preparing for the future, ( a bleak, and unrewarding one ) but a future all the same.

IMO-- I think that the CC is about awareness and getting new people involved in folding.
How would you feel if everytime you entered something or played a game and got Crushed. No good, you would lose interest. This is what is happening to other teams. We could hit 20 millon in one day whereas, it takes other teams a month to get that kind of production.
The only fair and fun way is to have a handicap system where everyone has to push as hard as they can to win.
In the long run it's about the science not personal/team goals.

Thanks tank, my thoughts exactly.

It was created not to find the best folding team of the year.
It started out as a small contest between two sub teams from maxpc and ocau to have some fun. Only later other teams were invited in and has grown to what it is now.

I certainly could be wrong and am open to a history lesson.  The (limited) number of posts I've read portrayed it as something more competitive.

If it is more of a "friendly competition" then I retract my previous comments.

I would argue, though, that it does nothing to spread the word about folding as it involves members of teams that have already been folding.

It's just not the same, If you replace the trophy, with a certificate of particapation. Example : most home runs in a season, is not the same as most home runs in a season "Asterest (*) ", where * means 13 game extended season, and gross use of steroids allowed. Just not interested in a plack that says fastest mile, if down at the bottom of the page it says (* with a 3/4 mile head start) , and other particapents wearing lead shoes.

We must boil our enemies flesh from their bones and drink heartily of the soup of winning!  Be they handicapped or robust in health all must be burned and trod upon before our feet!

And when I started here I actually thought that Chimp Challenge meant that it was an inter-team "competition" Trophy.

I say we let everyone who participates in the CC show the Moniker for the next year. That is, if it is truly to raise awareness. That would certainly gain exposure.

In the past EVGA would take into consideration , Chimp challange folding,( on a case by case basis) ; if you were close to the EVGA buck mark, and missed it because of chimp challange, No word yet if that will be the pollicy this year, will have to wait on ShaneD to say.

Well!!...
if someone can clarify or setup the rules for someone to read
it would be helpful

when does the contest start/end?
and how would EVGA allow users folding in the chimp challenge to earn evga bucks?
