Hi Guys I am running SLI GTX 480s, sometimes Tri-Sli.

Why are my connectors melting? I am pretty sure it is not my PS that is the problem. Silverstone Strider ST1500 1500W, once I cleared the melted plastic out of the MB 24 pin connection area...the system booted up fine. However if the MB continues to draw this melting power for the GTX 480's...it is only a matter of time before I have a major failure. Why have a MB capable of triple sli if the 24 pin power connector is going to melt

Should I/Will they RMA my E760 Classified?

Not the first time i've seen a thread on this topic and the same 2 pins on the power connector. The other guy managed to find another person with the same deal from another country.  I dont think any of them figured out why it happend.

I think EVGA RMA'd the one guys board though.

if im not mistaking those two pins supply power to the pcie lanes, i think at one point Shamino said that they added the 6pin connector for the pcie on the 4way and sr-2 boards, because this was a problem with certain cards (mainly ATI) drawing too much power through the pcie lanes when they were in multicard configuration.

Edit: here is another thread with the same problem that goes into more detail, look at page 2

I do not think the PS really needs to be replaced....still works, not it's fault for meeting the power it was asked to supply? MB still worked too....but if the MB is not able or is allowing/can't handle the power requirements of the 480's. I should try replacing the MB...at least the replacement may be better able to handle it (power pulled).

the motherboard's 24pin connector just acts as an interface to receive power, if the power supply isn't capable/can't provide enough power this will happen. chances are what happened is the demand for 12v power via the pcie slots was more than the power supply could provided and eventually got way to hot and melted.  if it was the motherboard's fault then you would have burned up traces

i would assume that their was either a bad connection somewhere along the line and possibly something shorted or the power supply was defective from the factory. since that amount of power draw wasn't that great

http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=500697&high=raw2dogmeat , not just you...this happened to me on my 759, contact EVGA and see what they say. I got approved for rma (replacement board will be here tomorrow!) I still don't know what caused mine. I was using a Thermaltake 1200 watt psu; bought a replacement  X58 760 in preparation of denied rma, and at same time bought new Corsair 1200 watt psu in case...so far, still using the T.T. (the Corsair having 1 big rail scares me a little) have'nt even opened the Corsair. My computer never ran right since I built it in April of 2009 (freezes during game, or on internet) now I've got the most stable and fastest pc I've ever owened, so I'm pretty sure I had a bad m.b.  In response to it not happening to Nvidia cards...that's all I've ever owed...2 480's installed at time of incident.  GOOD LUCK!

Somethings got to be wrong with your 480. Could be out of spec. I had a similar problem once when I smelled something burning after plugging in a second 285GTX and I called Corsair who made my PSU and they thought it was the video cards fault. Well after reseating my video card a couple times the problem went away. But the point is I would RMA the video card and your psu obviously becuase of the melted connector.

I'd most definately rma the ps and get a new one without a melted connector.  The wire and the rail its attached to have been stressed and no telling what else has been stressed.  Just a matter of time before it rears its ugly head and does something else.

I can see it possibly being a video card.....but they are in good and tight..very good and tight.

I have submitted a ticket to EVGA...this will be the second time this model MB has been replaced. Return courier is starting to get expensive..$50 bucks a pop.

Going to look into RMA the PS as well, as I am moving to NZ in about 90 days. I do not want to get stuck with dealing with this there.

Decided to do some stress testing. Measuring the temps of the yellow wires and area while running Alien vs Predator Benchmark.

    Running 2 x GTX 480's - wires outside temp hit 65 - 70C
    Running 3 x GTX 480's - wires outside temp hit 95 - 107C

    Called EVGA tech.

1st tier said this is the first they ever heard of it.
2nd tier said ...yep seen the mod. First we have ever seen melted connector...but basically nothing wrong with the MB performance =(.

I said but MB makers seem to adding a molex connector to the MB to help with the power draws of multiple GPU's.

EVGA - Basically said - yes..but nothing wrong with the board.

    They will RMA the board.
I said great...but I can't help but feel this will just happen again. They said...probably .

Seems I will be forced into doing the mod in hope that it is suppose to help take off some of the load on the wires that melted the connector.

Overall after getting off the phone with EVGA..I am just kinda at a loss. Lol I am not even sure what I could have expected them to do other then replace the MB,perhaps upgrade it. But replacing it, I can't help the feeling that this isn't fixing the problem, just will have to rma down the road and watch the PS wire get browner.

Perhaps I just got unlucky and the MB I have can't handle my 480's.

Thank you for the input guys....wish me luck soldering.

Also isint the graphics card getting most of its power from the extra 2 power connectors on the card itself? With that said why would the MB have to pull extra power from the power supply to feed the cards?

Could the prob possably be from the multi rail p/s not having proper load balance?  I've read a reveiw once on P/Ss that said the all P/Ss are actually multi rail even though they state that there a single rail.

yes the gpus do get most of their power from the 2 6/8pin connectors but they also get up to 75w from the pci slot. certain card like i said earlier draw more power from the pci slots when overclocked and under load.  if the rails were improperly balanced then he would be getting random shutdowns. and that statement about all power supplies being single railed is partially true in most cases except for example the corsair hx1000 which each rail is actually a different power supply. if you want to know more about multi/single rail power supplies then ask Kaninja he knows a lot about power supplies

Interesting.. but one guy said its not the same deal?

Possably another prob with loose pin connection? I mean look at the pins on that connector where it melted. They look spread out. They could of got hot cuase of that unless they just spread like that from when it cooked.

If some of the pins in the connector had been splayed open, in other words loose on the pins they go on you could get that kind of problem. If it where mine I would rma the PS just to be safe. there has also been others that have had problems with the 1500w psu from Silverstone. I had a 1000w Silverstone and it did well for a long time but died eventually.

As a couple posters have hinted at, this could simply be caused by a poor connection. High resistance creates heat. I wouldn't even think twice about doing a RMA for the too with the fried 24 pin

STEvil;4526590no, its a poor connection at the 24pin connector.   It is not a problem of the PSU not able to provide enough power or the board not able to transport the power through its power plane to the PCI-E slots.

Well Asus were having the same problem with the P6T7WS and they have now added a molex to the motherboard with their Rev.2 which has just been released.  It may only happen in extreme load situations, and its not the manufacturers fault that the 24pin standard can't handle the load, but if you make and sell boards to take the hardware and these sorts of failures occur then send it back and get a board with extra power IMHO.

Nice, I just had this same issue with E760 and Antec 1200 tpq, same 2 pins melted inside the 24-pin socket. I hope this is not a recurring issue as I just received a series of RMA boards with 1 problem after another... 3rd time is the charm I hope.

    - I check ALL Female connectors  for enlargement before inserting  the male members and gently pushed straight into place -not moving it side to side with a lot of force on a angle when aligning any power pins.
-new or used parts should be checked for this before there is a issue as
over heated connector will expand anyways and turns into a chicken and egg thing -did it cause the problem or was it a caused by a nother issue.

Not what I wanted to hear as I just bought a TPQ-1200 to pair with my E762
