Rolled back my Realtek driver (the previous one was from August) and it worked like a charm.  Now I wish I had the last three days I spent troubleshoting back and the 80 bucks I spent on a new power supply.

Same solution worked for me.

I'm having the same exact problem as the op. Just started yesterday. It was working fine for weeks. I also have an Intel X25-M 160GB SSD as the above member posted. I haven't tried installing Win7 on any other drives since this issue started so don't know if that would make a difference for me. I'm trying to avoid having to reinstall the os. Both cards work fine with sli disabled. I even uninstalled the Nvidia drivers and just have the Microsoft ones installed. I was wondering if there's a way to enable sli with just the Microsoft drivers installed? I doubt it cause there's no control panel to do it with. What I did yesterday before the problem started was install a few windows updates and do a registry tweak to remove the Homegroup, Network, Libraries, Favorites links from the navigation pane in Windows Explorer. Don't see how that would affect the gpu or it's drivers. Sometimes the bsod mentions nvlddmkm.sys or just a stop error with no specific file mentioned. I'm thinking it's a driver compatibility issue with Win7. For now I'm going to reinstall the Nvidia drivers and just use the op's workaround of enabling sli only when playing a game.

Having the same issue here I have also reported this to nvidia along with a ref to the forum post and a problem sig. I will keep you guys informed of the reply I get from nvidia.

As promised:

Re:Win 7 "nvlddmkm.sys" crash error on bootup 2010/03/03 14:38:50 (permalink)
I am getting the exact same issue with only slightly different system specs.
OK so.   I have an Issue anytime i enable my sli function through the nvidia control panel. It will enable and function (it seems) correctly untill the system is restarted for any reason. when the system tried to boot with sli enabled the system crashes and i get a nvlddmkm.sys error string.

I just finished running a bios update for my motherboard as there was 1 more current version, only 1 release different than the original.
the newest shows as the EVGA-E758_44 version  which i successully flashed.
the Issue is still the same after the bios update, if sli is enabled then the system will ALWAYS crash after the starting windows splash screen but before the user selection page.
the current Driver i have for my video cards is the most recent.
which shows as the 196.75_desktop_win7_winvista_64bit_english_whql

I have run memory test on my ram and all 6 gigs check out fine, no errors, the memory test on the video ram also checks out as fine with no errors (as a note the memory testing was done without sli enabled). all hardware diagnostics on the video cards and motherboard pass with no fails
I have used 1 Vid card at a time and both cards function fine as long as not in SLi mode.
with both cards in the motherboard in any order of PCIe slot/card configs I get the same results regardless of which card is where etc..
I have used both the 3 way Sli connector bridge, and the 2 way one, with no change of results. (I use the 3 way mostly as it is more durable and fits more secure)
also i only use 1 monitor and have tried using it with all the different available ports on the cards and it displays just fine without Sli enabled, which i found odd as it should ONLY work right if connected to the card in the PCIex16 slot 1 on the MB but..Shrug i don't see that as a problem.
and last FYI note here. in the BIOS for the motherboard i DO have the maximum aperature size for PCIe cards set to 2048  instead of 1024. i know the cards are each only 1024 but with both in,with or without it in an sli mode it should be able to use the full 2048, also the OS takes that setting over after it loads anyway so is pretty MOOT point IMOpinion, but thought i would include that note. oh and i have run it in 1024 mode also and the crash is still the same when SLI is enabled from the nvidia control panel.

OH and i thought of another point that I as a technician would think relevant. The Video cards i have ARE the same chipset and GPU, but am not sure if they have the  same Bios versions. I can tell just by looking that the cards are the same except produced in different manufacturing locations, and am not sure if they are same revision or not, (I ordered duplicate cards, i got 2 of same make/model but not exact duplicates)

Please look into this problem as it is making me very crazy:)

Re:Win 7 "nvlddmkm.sys" crash error on bootup 2010/03/03 15:45:32 (permalink)
Woot:
quick follow up note here. I un-installed my Lan adaptors  for the Realtek PCIe GBE family controllers but did not delete the driver files (both of them)
then enabled SLI and restarted. it restarted fine and is still in SLI mode and the system re-installed those drivers automatically. so i went to EVGA website and DLed the Lan driver they give for this MBoard. I will simply uninstall the current ones and install the ones i DLed (which i think are the same though (it shows EVGA_X58_Network but during install tells the 3 series of lan adaptors it is for) and see if i can restart in SLI mode.
So i did that and It seemed to work. I was able to restart the PC in SLI and it was fine.
So here i got to looking deeper and i noticed something relevant that made me kinda go well duh.....The lan adaptors are PCIe hubbed units.....so with the new Core i3-i5-i7 series Cpus that quickpath technology that ties the memory to cpu means that the MB doesn't have the same type of pci Bridged or Front side bus designs..so now instead of USB hubbed or  PCI bridged Lan adaptors they are PCIe bridged devices, tied in essence to the same controllers as the Video cards are, so when you enable SLi you are telling that controller it can access the full range for all Pcie devices....herein lies the Bsod..with the Windows update lan drivers they are designed as a quick and dirty PCI bridged controller for a larger number of those controllers..and they are not well designed for the SLI mode..so when the Lan adaptors try to initialize it causes the Video cards to fail to send the Sync Ack (sync aknowledge) to the Bios in the required span and therefore it times out and the system registers it as a Video card Hard stop and Tosses out the Bsod or just shuts down and restarts depending on MB bios settings.
Some of that is just a guess as it could be that the lan adaptors start first but time out when the SLI mode starts.. either way it makes the system BSOD ..as well all noticed.

SOOO if it is a EVGA MB you have this issue with.  Try DL'ing the adaptors they have for your MB series. then just uninstall (and in win 7 tell it to delete the driver files too) the lan adaptors your system has in the device manager, and restart the system with SLI enabled. if it Boots up fine you know it is the drivers and installing the ones you just DL'ed should fix the issue. If you Bsod again then install the new drivers from Safe mode while your re-installing Video drivers, then after reboot Try enabling sli again and restart again, If you still BSOD then post about it here so we all know your issue was not the Lan drivers.

TY soo much to all you Previous posters as your Steps helped me, even as a tech myself I was just not thinking about the lan adaptors as the problem as I had no issues with network.
