Followup 6/8: just talked with evga tech support, and the word is that with the latest bios, it will work. Given the serial# from my unopened box (from newegg) they say it has the latest bios and it should work for me, and if not, various RMA/cross-ship/bios replacement options are available. It would be real great if evga can document this somewhere (CPU compatibility list, the pdf docs for the three X79 models, ...) to avoid this hassle for all involved. However, hats off to evga tech support. Looks like I'll be building this weekend after all! (watch this space as the drama unfolds, my last build was in 2005 and is still my main computer, I'm hoping to get 7 years outta this build as well.)

Can anyone from EVGA state specifically for the record if the 3820 is or is not compatible with the X79 Classified. I have just bought both from newegg, not seeing that this crazy incompatibility may exist, and I do not want to open either box until this issue (or non-issue) has been clarified. This will cost me either the restocking fee on the mobo or the $300 CPU is worthless and I will have to buy at $550 CPU. I can't understand how the X79 classified can only work with 2 CPUs, one of which is $550 and the other approaching a grand.
EVGA Please state for the record what the situation is.

Yes, I believe that the X79 Classified is only compatible with the 6-core processores. I purchased an X79 Classified and a 3820 cpu - it does not work, producing the same behavior you are seeing posts an FF to the onboard display for about 20 seconds, then resets itself.
Pretty frustrating - this is not called out anywhere in EVGA docs.
