I've attached a Western Digital WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive to my system to use as a backup drive, and I have noticed that it has really increased the amount of time it take my system to boot. Many sites suggest turning off the "boot from usb" BIOS option to fix this. Does anyone know how to do this for the X58 SLI, or have another suggestion for how to fix this issue? Thanks

All you should need to do is set boot from other devices to disabled.

EVGAtech_StephanK All you should need to do is set boot from other devices to disabled. It's under "Advanced BIOS Features"

HalloweenWeed EVGAtech_StephanK All you should need to do is set boot from other devices to disabled. It's under "Advanced BIOS Features" Thank you for the advice. I set this option to disabled, but I am still experiencing the long boot times. I also tried disabling the USB Storage Function (just to see what would happen). This did speed up my boot time, but I was no longer able to use my USB keyboard and mouse. I suspect doing this might make the drive unusable in Windows 7, but since I was not able to use my keyboard or mouse, I could not test this. The BIOS still lists this hard drive in the Hard Disk Boot Priority section. Would you know if there is a way to let the BIOS know that this is not a bootable HDD? Would that speed things up, or is it simply that the BIOS needs the extra time to detect the drive? Thanks UPDATE: I once again tried disabling the USB Storage Function in USB Device Settings. This time, after Windows 7 booted, I unplugged and replugged in my USB keyboard and mouse. Windows then recognized these devices. I then restarted my computer. This time the BIOS ignored my external HDD, and Windows automatically detected it and both my keyboard and mouse. So to summarize, the solution to the long boot up times I was experiencing was to disable the USB Storage Function in the USB Device Settings menu. This required me to unplug and replug in my USB keyboard and mouse on the first boot up to Windows, but after that all three USB devices (External HDD, keyboard, and mouse) were automatically detected on subsequent boots to Windows while the USB External HDD was ignored by the BIOS. Note that I had re-enabled the Boot from Other Devices option. The solution works with that on or off. Thanks.

Holy cow! I just gained 20 seconds of boot speed by disabling USB Storage Function. I really never attributed my longer than desired boot times to the USB backup drive I've had plugged in for last year. I'm such a bonehead!! LOL...well you pick up something new all the time. BTW, I didn't need to do anything other than diable the USB Storage Function. No other issues with keyboard, mouse etc. as noted by the OP.

it will boot faster but once its in the startup windows screen it loads slow, thats the downside of it if you disable mass storage,
