Hi Folks. As some of you may have noticed, I'm selling my heavy-duty "Modern Industry" to recover some costs, and because (tentatively) I'll be living at sea all summer. I'm therefore building a new rig with the following characteristics:

  • Silent.
  • Passive-cooled.
  • Sturdy, durable.
  • 100% hand-made.
  • Ridiculously stable.
  • Heavily EMF shielded.
  • Light, small, portable.
  • Dust, moisture, maintenance free.
  • As green as a speed demon can be.
  • Refined, understated; beautiful high-quality materials.
  • Much cheaper than the previous protein-cruncher to recover costs.

Final hardware still undecided. But, case design nearly finished... I think you'll be surprised what this little monster can do

ETA: Late March.
EDIT: moved to May due to construction setbacks
HINT: Buy my old case so I can start getting more parts together

First item ordered due to excellent sale opportunity:

OCZ Agility 60GB (230MB/s read, 135 write) for just over $100 shipped, new!

    impressive.

Why dont you part your Modern Industry out? Im sure it will gain a lot of potential buyer interest.

Thanks, I'll take lots of pictures as it progresses later this spring.

I'm just selling the case, not the core hardware. Like it says in the sale thread, I'm happy to remove parts if someone just wants the case, but I need to sell the chassis first with that person's satisfaction in mind. If I part it out before someone buys the case, I'll have a chassis with a gaping hole where the radiator vents, empty light ports, an empty space where the upside down pump should go, etc. The case was carefully designed with airflow built around the radiator so they should really go together unless the initial buyer has other plans.

    Thanks and glad to hear

Sea: I've been accepted to a study abroad program... you travel on a massive passenger ship with classrooms, taking regular college courses, then the ship sails into ports all over the world and you either go off on your own or work with professors for hands-on class events. You can do everything from hiking through mountains to building houses for poor folks to seeing the Great Pyramids to eating dinner with an Italian family who adopts you to dancing with African folks... I personally have barely traveled the U.S. and am pumped... It's not for certain though, I'm applying for scholarships and can't go w/o them covering all of it (it's a long shot since I'm barely paying for the schooling I'm getting now... I like long shots tho ).

LOL. Now now, it wouldn't be a Mac unless I finished building it and lit $1000 on fire next to it.

    Re:"Silent Steel" - Build Log 2010/04/01 21:08:33 (permalink)
Spent last week tinkering. However, I broke a bolt on my CPU cooler (the directions say "tighten until stops turning" but apparently I can exert an upward force stronger than a pillar of steel... cough) and several tools gave out trying to drill through the steel backbone plate for the chassis. I no longer have space/time/etc so work will resume in mid-May.

The worst part of this update is that the program I was enrolled in got overbooked for the first time in 50 years. So even though I was accepted, I had to transfer my enrollment to about 8 months later. Thus this project is pointless other than needing to recoup costs from the previous build... Anyway I'll shut up, enjoy some sneak peaks:

    Thanks iNFAMOUSJACK

This power supply was chosen for several reasons. Are you PSU savvy enough to guess what the #1 is?

Dear Noctua, your products are absolutely outstanding, now please choose a non-hideous color scheme.

MK-13, one of the first ones to buy one at the time I got it. 470 being a short length and power hungry has messed up my plans...

No way in hell I'm leaving uncovered VREGs... Do you guys know what board it is?

Since building my last system I've been noticing an over-use of MDPC-X unisleeve. I'm still going to use a little in this build (it's in the mail) but this is a little more functional... You'll see why the function is extra important later...

A steel backbone and lighter aluminum for the rest of the frame...

Where do you get the transparent-top hard drives, or is it a DIY mod? If it is a mod, how'd you do it if you dont mind me asking.

It's a Western Digital RaptorX -- they come that way. Sadly it's an extinct breed, Velociraptors are ugly little 2.5" drives wrapped in a heatsink.

What part of it doesn't look cheap so far? I'll be making a few hundred on it now that most of my original rig is sold (still have my Micro board, 920, and a 2 260s to sell too).

The case, for example, will cost me all of $40 or so with all the metal and filters included, because I'm salvaging paneling and acrylic from junked hardware. I even found leftover paint for it. In the pictures above the motherboard costs less than what I'll sell my Micro for, which in turn I'll be making a sizable profit on since I bought it with a massive stockpile of EVGA bucks in the first place. Another example is the green VREG heatsinks above, I could have spent $20-30 buying individual minisinks from somewhere pricey like Petra's, but got all of those in a single VGA VRAM cooling kit for about $7, and they fit my color scheme and airflow plan

    Etc.

(The only thing I have genuinely spent too much money on is sleeving, but I think you'll see why when it's done )

Haha, nope! I've actually run non-EVGA boards in the past, I just thought they were flaky and badly supported. This one is a brand I've never tried before. You can say every letter of that brand too

    HINT:

    You guys are good.

I figured with everyone moving to bigger cases and boards the size of my torso, it was time to go the opposite direction... But still pack a big punch

I thought about the Zotac one, the wi-fi is nice, but after comparing the layout/design on this one just worked better for the build.

Do you think a mod would be possible to do to have a transparent cover for the hdd?

I don't think so. The internal chamber is vacuum-sealed with sophisticated equipment. There's a reason the RaptorX is the only HDD of its kind, it apparently took WD a ton of engineering manpower to design it. Putting a clear, fragile top over a really delicate device that's usually wrapped in a metal plate would be extremely difficult for a regular person with regular tools to pull off.

I'm one of those people who doesn't believe in saying anything is "impossible" but the probability is so low for a regular person it might as well be...

im not sure how many fans you will be using but noiseblockers makes some 6-8db ones, but boy are they expensive, but if youre only doing like intake-exhaust you should be able to manage it.

and im guessing you chose the seasonic because its 100% modular and 90+gold

You have no idea... the heatsink when centered covers almost the entire board, and has slightly warped the board on all 4 corners.

Actually I will only be using that single fan It has a ultra low noise adapter bringing it down to a mere 10dBa @ 40CFM. Noiseblocker fans are nice, but this one came w/ the cooler and saved me about $20ish.

Good guess on the PSU, it is indeed one of (if not the) most efficient PSUs I've seen, and the 100% modular will be very helpful for sleeving. But it does one other thing no other PSU I've seen can do...

It took 260 SLI Furmark and 8-thread Prime running at the same time to make the fan turn on -- not ramp up, not get noisy, but turn on at all... You can barely even tell the system is alive the rest of the time. This PSU has simply floored me so far...

    4770K @ 4.1 (Prolimatech Genesis)  |  EVGA GTX 970  |  EVGA 1200W P2 Platinum  |  256GB Samsung Pro  |  Sound Blaster Z  |  16GB Corsair Dominator 1866  |  Custom CaseLabs Mercury S5  |  U2714H, Sennheiser HD 380 Pro, Das Ultimate (blank), and too many mice...

I see. Well thanks for the info.
