I'll give you $10 PayPal if you successfully pull it off and the drive safely holds data after 6 months of regular use. It'd be cool to see. Wow that's amazing. I have an old hard drive.. It doesn't work anymore but it would be good practice, well okay it does but it's a Windows ME so it's basically worthless. Not even SATA. I may have to try this on it.

I have actually shifted the enrollment to spring of 2011 since I could not sell parts fast enough before they ran out of spots, and if I was wait listed I couldn't get aid. But I definitely want to hear how it goes! Are you going to build your own mini-computer? You have no competitors now Show the laptops who's boss!

cj3waker [from another thread] what happened to the mini-itx passive cooled build? School and work to huge excess. No really, people say they're busy... I'm "I fall asleep standing up throughout the day" busy. LOL The materials for it are scattered all over... I actually have the core components running in a pile on a folding table... DFI P55 mini-ITX i7 860 4GB G.Skill 1.35v 1600mhz GTX 470 SeaSonic X750 OCZ 60GB Agility SSD The 470 and CPU are both cooled by the same single silent 120mm fan moving about 30CFM -- mission almost accomplished! If I get the case built, I think my crazy scheme will actually work Under load my 470 hits about 70-80C almost completely silent while with the stock cooler it would hit 90-100C with the fan ramping to 90-100% and breaking my ears.

I'm rarely in this subforum as I don't do this stuff to my system as a whole, though I have had many ideas to do something over the years. I'm impressed you're pursuing this one, it bares some resemblence to an idea I once had of an illusive high-end shrink. As it stands, how many liters (or the case volume dimensions) do you estimate your case to be? Seems like approximately 9 liters or 11" x 7" x 7" min. It's like that one Shuttle J3 with the X58 chipset for $1900; let's hope your total cost including labor isn't more, if you wanted to sell it...

Updates: - Got replacement bolts from Noctua for my cooler (I snapped a bolt)
- Mounted the MK-13 to my 470; with a dose of modding I have it running passive for everyday stuff, and with a single 40CFM fan am able to keep it around 70C load AND cool my CPU all with the same fan.
- Found and bought sublime green used on 1970-71 Mopar Muscle
NOTE: my build will never be as awesome as those 3 cars lehpron I'm rarely in this subforum as I don't do this stuff to my system as a whole, though I have had many ideas to do something over the years. It's like that one Shuttle J3 with the X58 chipset for $1900; let's hope your total cost including labor isn't more, if you wanted to sell it... Due to time constraints I was sadly considering buying a mini-ITX case and calling off the project. Then I see "oh crap lehpron is following now" so I have to see it through Lian Li has some attractive mini-ITX cases similar to the shuttle design (a few are smaller and nicer IMHO, like the Q07 box) -- Lian Li No squished X58 chipset though Mine is very cheap, even with paint the cost of the entire case is about $50. Though, I'm re-using the brushed aluminum panels from my previous case (acrylic window and some black paint too). The total volume of the case itself is probably closer to 1-2 liters; the PSU and probably optical are both externally mounted. Working on the frame today.

Thanks for the interest guys Today I went to buy an extra aluminum beam and somehow came home with bits, a drill tap set, multiple sand paper grits, and an entire $%^#i*% full-size drill press... This stuff is costing way too much, but I've been the "man of the house" for about 5 years now and have almost no tools except the Dremel I bought for "Modern Industry," and tools are long-term investments more so than any computer hardware... These tools should make this project MUCH easier and more professional. I'm very excited and appreciate having some folks to share it with Uploading might take a bit, but I'm taking photos of tools/progress. No more comments from me until pictures can do the talking.

Coming along Unfortunately the place I ordered my fancy '70-'71 sublime paint (on a Sunday afternoon) didn't ship until Wednesday afternoon, and by the time it arrives I'll be across the country for a month. *sigh* Meet some of my new friends I call him Phil. Phil the Drill. I never used to like rivets, but slowly coming around to them. Decided to use them on this build because of their low profile in corners (countersunk screws would be hard due to the thin aluminum I'm using). It's very hard to find a 3mm drill tap in a regular hardware store... I did however find a kit The lovechild of Phil the Drill and his girlfriend the tap set. This is the kind of precision I'd like to have on all my projects but have only recently been able to afford the tools for. New jigsaw doing its thing at weird angles. I even had to buy CLAMPS for this project, that's how sad my tool selection is. Last but not least, Mr. Dremel who did most of Modern Industry is back from retirement with some crisscross blades.

Ooooh that looks useful. Especially for angle cuts. If someone asks me for birthday gift ideas I'll suggest that Thanks! I was able to get pretty straight cuts using the jig at an angle, surprisingly: They're pretty smooth-edged too, very minimal sanding.

I may use that one blue sleeve somewhere in the build (power switch sleeve?) but it actually just came with the green order. Every order I get from MDPC-X has one extra length in a different color, I think it's good marketing Paint should be arriving today, the frame is cut and drilled but can't put it together for photos til the paint is done.

Thanks guys, haha yeah I saw it and thought SATA SNAKE, had to share. The main frame is finished but I've been moving across the country. I'll upload some existing pictures soon but nothing too revealing for at least 2-3 weeks BATTLE DAMAGE - right into the nail bed. Ouch. Wet sanding at multiple grits I'm increasingly leaning toward some bare aluminum for large portions of the build (with some kind of clear coat for corrosion protection) Dear SeaSonic, I loved your PSU so much that I ripped it to shreds, dipped it in super corrosive stripper, sanded it to hell and back, and have pieces of its dismembered frame scattered across several locations. And finally, the color quality of the photo isn't exactly perfect, but here's an idea of how J5 Sublime is going to look...

jpeg387 Nice looking build so far! Thanks! lonewolf218 You really love tormenting us, don't you??? It will be interesting to see how the sublime will look, it looks very bright! Honestly most of the frame is done, but I have not had time to get photos w/ traveling. It also isn't high enough quality yet. Some hints: - The I/O panel faces downward.
- The 470 stands vertically in front of the case.
- The PSU is mounted externally as a base weight.
- The frame is very minimalistic and (pending some design work I'm still doing) will stand on one leg.
- The chassis will hold 2 HDDs and 1 SSD.
Have a few more teasers: I'll try to upload a batch on Facebook so at least you'll get to see some there (much faster uploads).
