So, are you saying that we're going to crunch 4 or 5 cpu projects and 1 or 2 gpu projects simultaneously!? hoHoho.

Sure, why not!  I think a big part of the expeditions is getting exposure to different projects, and this is a good way to start.
@NerdGZ, I would not recommend Muon1 for your new Kraken - for some reason it seems to run quite a bit slower on AMD than Intel processors.

Let's do it then. Can we come up with the projects now?

CPU projects
1. POEM
2. Malariacontrol.net
3.
4.
5.

GPU projects
1. Collatz Collateral

Please suggest more and the listings can still changed. I think Barbarossa has his sights on Malariacontrol.net while I have my sights on MOUN1 (but I'm flexible on just any project).

This kraken was probed yesterday with a 6097 on f@h tpf was nealry 3:45/4:10 and obtined 18,965 points the temps were 40ºC on full load the mobo can be expanded with a triser 2u card so MOBAJOBG this rig is CPU only i´m considering enigma@home and malariacontrol escorting Barbarossa i7´s.
But Punchy you command give an objective and i will attack the ship

I guess that really depends on what everybody wants to do. It definitely makes sense to at lease do two (1 CPU + 1 GPU) at a time for those projects that only run on either CPU or GPU to get the most out of our systems.

I think we can confirm to just do 1 gpu project because there are only a few available. We can definitely do a different gpu project next week.

Give me a couple of hours to try and consolidate all the feedback into one post.  Maybe I can set up a signup sheet that everyone can fill out themselves, but I'm not sure yet - that would be later tonight.  However, consider this a smorgasbord of projects - there will be some that a number of folks want to do, and some that nobody, or only 1 or 2 want to do.
Based on Col323's feedback I think I will move my offline system from Muon1 to OGR and give it a quick try; Muon1 does not seem to scale well with cores.

I've done OGR before and decided to abort because the task took just too long to crunch. I didn't manage to figure out how to crunch it on more cores per task and also, this project task does not indicate its estimated completion date so no one knows when it'll finish.

I´m not set in stone on Malaria.  I just don´t like dealing with the side effects of Lariam, Malerone and the likes. So finding a proper cure or prophylaxis there has a meaning to me.

However,I´m open to other cpu projects as well. I just need to know until tomorrow evening over here, as I´ll be leaving Saturday morning. Otherwise I´ll be only able to properly join in on Monday then.

Don't let me stop anyone from working on something that's got a special meaning to you - I just want to try and spread out the effort across a goodly number of projects for maximum DC Vault benefit.

I can change projects if we come up with a more concise list.  I just picked two to get started while this discussion worked itself out.  I am partial to biological/medical/physics and I do like BOINC projects that I can run simultaneously on one rig.

I set up muon through yoyo, but I just saw that it only gives me yoyo credit.  Would it be more helpful to run it from it's standalone exe?

Yes, for our Muon team rank, it would be necessary to run it from the standalone exe.  More hassle for sure, but that's the only way their tracking system works.  Make sure to create a user.txt file with [EVGA]Opolis as the sole entry so that credit goes to our team.

Thanks Punchy.  I set it up last night but didn't know how to add the team to the user.txt, so I went the yoyo route. I will switch it over.

Re:"Plundering the DC Vault" - strategy thread 2012/02/16 10:02:28 (permalink)
I don't want to derail this thread, but I can help with OGR type related questions.  So if you're not interested in OGR, skip right over this post.

Punchy - you'll just need to download OGR work from dnet and let it crunch.  You can do this a couple ways.  1)Configuring the client on a networked machine with a large work threshold.  Then just usb drive the buff-in.og2 file (it won't be more than 100K or so) to the offline machine.  There are client switches -fetch -flush and -import to help automate this process.  2) You can send a mail to fetch[at]distributed.net containing these lines
contest=OGR
numblocks=1000
and then move the file to the machine.  I think you can grab 2000 stubs at a time, which should keep you busy for a bit.  If you have any questions on how to move files or how to upload work let me know.  I'm trying to be brief and not clutter up the thread.

MOBAJOBG - You're right, the client interface takes a little getting used to.  It *should* automatically detect all cores and load them up with work.  When it launches, it should come up with a message like "Automatic processor detection found 4 processors." Followed by the lines:

Loading crunchers with work...
OGR-NG #a: Loaded 27/6-21-5-30-9-22 (23.28 Gnodes done)
OGR-NG #b: Loaded 27/6-21-5-30-8-25* (204.15 Gnodes done)
OGR-NG #c: Loaded 27/6-21-5-30-10-1 (1.97 Gnodes done)
OGR-NG #d: Loaded 27/6-21-5-30-9-24* (13.23 Gnodes done)

#a corresponds to Core 1, #b to 2, etc.  all the way up to the number of cores in your system.  And yeah, OGR does not have a percentage bar.  That's because there's no good algorithmic way to determine how long a unit should take.  Most should take a few hours or less.  And here's a good rule of thumb.  The work unit name is the 27/a-b-c-d-e-f string you see above.  The more lower numbers you see and the further left they are in the string, the longer it will take.  If you see a trailing * on the name, that means it's a combined unit.  These generally take longer, but not always.  And don't worry about length, because points are awarded by how many calculations are performed.  So completing 12 units which do 100 calculations scores the same as 1 unit which does 1200 calculations.  Also, there is a way to gauge progress.  You'll see a line like this  OGR-NG #c:27/6-21-5-30-10-1+13-70-20-3 [17,548,850,541]   Basically, the higher the number immediately after the +, the further you are through the unit.  And the number in the [ ] is just how many calculations you have done so far (how many points that unit has scored you so far).

Hope this helps somebody.  Feel free to ask questions or PM or whatever.  I like OGR for the client; plus the math it does is useful in the real world, even in the medical science arena.

None of us is as strong as all of us.

Another OGR-only post: @Col323, Thanks for the help!  I have a 24-core system crunching OGR now.  A question I have is how do I tell it to only do OGR and not RC5, since it seems to be downloading both types of work?  Also, how do I get my userid and team set?  It seems like you start by giving an email address, then after you have completed some work, you can log in and set your userid and team?   Oh, and where do I get a login password?

If the client is running, choose the menu item Client -> Configure
2) Buffer and Buffer Update Options
9) Load Work Precendence
OGR-NG, RC5-72=0

Or you can just add this to your dnec.ini file:
[misc]
project-priority=OGR-NG,RC5-72=0
Then restart the client.

To join a team you need to complete some work.  The stats run once daily around 8 pm EST.   Then from the main OGR stats page ( http://stats.distributed....ects.php?project_id=27 ) you need to search for your mail address in the search box under Participant Stats.  That should take you to your personal stats page where you can see who you're stomping on.    Near the bottom of that page is a button which reads, "Please email me my password"  Hit that and check your mail about 10 minutes later.  When you receive your password, navigate to Crunching@EVGA's teampage  ( http://stats.distributed....t_id=27&team=32020 ) and click the link "I want to join this team!"  You'll be prompted for your mail and password.  Then you should be helping the team rise through the ranks!  (But I don't think you'll officially show up until the next stats run.)  Don't worry, all work completed prior to joining any team is credited to the 1st team you join.  (Any work completed for a prior team stays with that team.)   So if you want to grab 1 unit and upload it fast before the stats run today, you can.  Or you can run through all 1000 (or whatever large amount of units you requested) and they will all go to the team.
/edit - clarity (hopefully)

Col323, thanks for the dnetc client info! I was just starting to work on setup.  A little different than BOINC, but not bad.

Wow, I see we jumped to #63 with another 1200 points on the last DC Vault update thanks to people warming up on Muon1, POEM@Home and the other projects.

We "only" need another 13,000 points to reach #50 !

Col323, thanks for an indepth as well as generous information of OGR project and I'll give it another spin using your guide on one physical core (HT off) out of the i7 990X processor ...should be interesting.

I'm more confident of it now and has just flushed 4 packets of result (~18 mins). The next things to do are waiting for my results to appear in OGR-27, "Please email me my password." (It's at the bottom of your own stats screen, need to scroll down to see it) and finally, join our team here.

Quick update on RNAworld.  Still waiting for validation of wu's but this is what I have so far.  Run times are in the 1-2 hour range for the small wu's.  Pending points are in the 30 - 56 credits range. These results were using 6 cores of a 920 oc to 4.0.  3 hours of run time produced @ 500 credits.  Ran 12 wu's  last evening with no issues, so hopefully the project is stable.  (this is a Beta project).

This project runs under BOINC client although setup is a little different.  Go to http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/ to set up user account just like any BOINC project.  In Boinc client select tools-->
attach to project (this project does not have a handy icon to use)
in the url field paste the above link, connects to project then input
account email and password and you are good to go.

This project has XXL units, some of which are massive. Completion times of ten's of hours to hundred's of hours.  Code was written without checkpoints for any of the wu's so if wu's are interrupted, they reset back to the beginning.  Because of this imo, running the smaller units would be the safer way to go.

If you need to suspend work you can go into computing preferences
and select 'yes' for 'Leave applications in memory while suspended'
and put system in hibernation.

To get a top 50 all teams ranking on this project will require less than 800,000 points.  8 million points would put us in 11 place ahead of the 'Dutch Power Cows'.

Currently the servers are reporting 45,000 large units available and
26,000 small.

I'm not married to this project but at some point it could be a good
project to plunder.  Mainly wanted to provide some information about this project and to satisfy my own curiosity.  As always, willing to put my resources to work for what is best for the team.

My hpcs systems have some big primegrid units going right now.... Once they finish those, I'll be adding some of these to them.... If this runs through the 29th, my gpus will be used for the primegrid challenge....

My main rig right now is going through most of the boinc projects listed above that im already attached to....

I did some RNAWorld a few days ago. You can see my validated units here for reference: http://www.rnaworld.de/rnaworld/results.php?userid=5828&offset=0&show_names=0&state=3

The XXL ones I got weren't "that" big, look at the times on the linked page. A couple at 10 or so ours and one a bit over 20, others much shorter than that.

Okay, I updated the first post with all the info that people have been posting.  From there I have the following condensed list:
CPU:
1.  Muon1
2.  Malariacontrol
3.  POEM@Home
4.  RNAWorld@Home
5.  Enigma@Home
6.  OGR-27

GPU:
1.  Collatz Conjecture

Internet:
1.  Majestic-12

Does this look okay?  We have 22 people signed up, so we can end up with a few people on each.

That looks fine to me.  I think I'll jump on all of those with the exception of the non-boinc projects....  I have enigma and collatz going right now with enigma on a 4-cpu instance with hpcs....

I like the new list, much easier on the eyes.

I switched to the standalone Muon1 client and have some Poem@home running as well.  I will get in about a week's worth of work until I have to start gearing up for Folding M@dness.  Let the Plundering begin

Have we decided on a team name yet?

I might jump around between these projects a bit until Monday night, then I will settle for a couple and let it run while I'm out of town for the week.

BTW, Punchy it's OGR-27, not 72.
