The voltage regulation and phasing on the GTX480 is much more robust than what is found on the GTX580. In fact modders and overclockers were cutting dead GTX480s in half to make a Frankenstein monster using the GTX480s power circuitry with a GTX580 in order to be able to feed the GPU enough voltage because the stock circuitry on the GTX580 couldn't handle the amount of voltage they were pushing to it and they were killing cards.
But yes, flashing a modified bios will void your warranty if you kill the card and can't flash the stock bios back to it before you RMA it.
