I've passed the question on the the Product Management team. It seems our documentation doesn't mention the keying anywhere. Once I hear back I'll post it here and see if we can get that info added to the product page. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

On my EVGA Z97 FTW board, the M.2 slot is labeled 2232, which means its keyed for 32mm long cards. I have verified the length with a ruler, it is 32mm. However, 32mm SSD cards are not in production by any company that I know of. It may be possible to fit the somewhat popular 42mm-long M.2 SSD in there, held in with some double-sided foam tape, but any longer than that will bump into the PCIE x1 slot.

Also, if you do use this slot, it will drop your single video card from x16 to x8, or if you have 2 cards, drop them down from x8/x8 to x8/x4. This will disable SLI, unfortunately.

Thanks for a heads up on SLI not working.  That's a total deal killer for using one of these SSDs. I'm ordering another SATA SSD instead.

Looks like I missed an email correcting the first report of B to key E. I apologize for that.

while all manufacturers of motherboards and PCIe cards using the most common

Wow, it uses E keying???  That's another way of saying the M.2 slot on this board is useless.  I challenge someone to find a single SSD sold on Amazon that uses E keying.  Maybe they exist, but I couldn't find any.

another option that I am using
Addonics ADM2PX4 PCIe 3.0 to M.2 SSD Adapter

Very disappointed with EVGA over this issue.
My adapter has not come in yet....will post when I get it installed and running.

    Re: port M2 on ftw Z97 2015/07/31 10:40:24 (permalink)
Yes I think people generally agree that the m.2 implementation generally was lacking from EVGA's z97 series. An unfortunate move likely for some sort of cost savings. The thing revolves around a lack of communication again on spec sheets and in the manuals and lack of understanding... But to be fair to the consumer, I would argue that one can easily be mislead here into thinking this slot can be used for storage. I love EVGA, but I don't think they have any good excuses on this issue.

For example, I know others (including in youtube reviews) where people thought the msata/mpcie slot on the z97 classified was an m.2 slot and were disappointed. BUT I made my purchase of the z97 classified knowing full well about the older form factor (since it was advertised, in the spec sheet and manuals, etc) but was generally ok with it since m.2 wasn't big on my list for my type of use. Plus the existence of lots of PCIE x 3.0 slots and the plx chip, etc, meant that my future proofing was still pretty good. #Iheartmyz97classified

BUT I can easily see how the confusion on the z97 FTW would have been MUCH MUCH greater... Most people have heard of M.2, less people know of all the various keys.. I think most people would easily assume that this M.2 slot can work for either or one of PCIE or SATA M.2 keys...

BOTTOM LINE the ONLY real USE of the FTW M.2 will be for special WiFi and Bluetooth cards. See www.amazon.com/Doubleshot-Wireless-AC-Bluetooth-Wireless-Network/dp/B00VQF1IHW for like the only example of this type of key being used... Also, Im not even sure this particular key e is even long enough!

Even here, note that antennas, connections etc are not included, so your likely much better off just buying a pcie card for wifi Bluetooth.

If EVGA really only intended these slots be used for wifi/Bluetooth solutions, they really should have said so.

EDIT: Technically the only real advantage I see with this is the same as with using a Bluetooth/wifi card on the Z97 classy msata/mpcie port... essentially you can find or buy the right card for say 30 bucks or so and find an internal antenna kit on ebay. Then you can just run the antenna on the inside of your chassis and you wont have two thingys sticking out the back of your case... Its actually not a bad idea if you can find the right components... You may even get some benefits there if you run long enough antenna wires. but again, none of this has been communicated
