The responses I have gotten from various admins is that the Phi is not well suited. They either found it to be not very efficient, or just didn't suit their needs. Many don't even want to try due to how few own them. It is a shame because it would be really nice to be able to dump an additional ~240 threads in a box with a single card upgrade.

Xeon Phi's have been dropping in price quite a bit. I think the first gen ones were down to $100-$150 last year at multiple websites.

That link is just for reference as some of the link posts within it no longer are valid. However, they were like a fire sale last year.

We even offered to loan or donate one to slicker at Collatz last year since he tends to be one of the few projects quick to adopt new devices. He declined as he felt he had too much on his plate as is and he refuses donations. So, if he took us up on it, it would be on loan. He never took us up on it...

What is that?  I don't even understand what it's for?  Is it just extra CPU power?

It is a co-processor with 60 unique x86'ish cores that are HT with 4 threads each instead of the typical 2. However, on paper they are much nicer than in real life as they are a pain to work with (from what I've heard). This was Intel's  attempt to compete with nVidia on the high end co-processor market. So far, it really hasn't impressed or caught on.

ergo - "240 threads in a box with a single card upgrade." Very cool concept, since you just added a card, but apparently not good in reality.
