I've been meaning to start folding ever since I started building my computer and now that I finally made the effort to download the client, I've run into some problems because I haven't read the threads related to it thoroughly which mostly is because it's 5am right now... So.. I'm curious if there's any new updates as to setting up the tracker that was mentioned in the thread starter? I tried following the instructions on on "How to start folding - the easy way" but it seems you've come a long way since v2. I tried installing v2, looks like it works but nothing going on there so I thought I'd try installing v7. Ran it which I downloaded from the F@H page and it opens up this webapp that shows me my folding slots. Says waiting for idle on my GPU slot, what does this mean? How do I make it start? I also have "cpu:3", does this mean it's only utilizing my 3rd core? I want to let 'er rip as I'm about to go to bed right now. Oh and one more thing, I was starting to get really concerned about why there was no progress on the cpu even though it was running. When I saw 1.12% my eyes lit up! OMG THIS IS SO HAPPENING JAJAJAJJAA. I'm really excited to see where this brings me in a couple of days, I currently have 9705 PPD on my cpu, not sure what that means, but all I know is I'm helping a good cause and that's all that really matters! Ok I'm done sleep rambling. Thanks for reading!
v7's default behavior is to only fold on GPUs when the computer has been idle for more than 10 minutes, and with CPUs to fold on (n-1) threads. If you want to fold more, move the Folding Power slider from Medium to Full. This was made the default behavior because some people experience lag when folding on Full, and they didn't want potential contributors being turned away by that behavior. I'm guessing their thought process was "better for more people to be somewhat underperforming than to have a bunch of people quit and warning others off of 'that program that makes your computer unusable.'"
You probably also will want to set up the client to use the newest GPU core, as it's much more efficient on Fermi cards than the one you're getting now (the core is what does the calculations). Look for the FAH icon in the systray, click on it and select Advanced Control. Once that opens, select Configure, click on the Slots tab, highlight the GPU slot, hit Edit, then add an Extra Slot Option at the bottom with name 'client-type' and value 'advanced' (no quotes on either). Then select OK/Save as needed on all the extra windows that opened up. Starting with the next Work Unit you should be getting WUs from projects that use core 17, which is the one you want to be running.
