have you had a chance to put this machine to work. meaning...earn it's keep. because it's sure keeping you busy.

I will be using the same motors and some other stuff, but I need new metal slabs, going with linear bearing rails, and this will have close to TWO FEET of travel in both X/Y and far more accurate then my current machine.

I'd love to see a worklog and or guide to make your own :)

Yeah I am going to miss my 295's, they both went for RMA a few weeks back because they quit clocking up in 3D mode. Both got replaced with GTX 480's. Also sent back a GTX260 192 Core I had laying around that was dead dead, it is on it's way back as a GTX460FSB 1024MB. On the Flipside, will give me something new to do. I also am just sitting back waiting on the next round of CPU and GPU releases to build an entire rig. This is probably the longest I've ever run a platform ever.

Will a good layer of liquid tape over the front and back of the board and vaseline in the CPU socket be enough for phase change?

Wow that sucks. Sorry to hear that. That is a sad day man..

Except now he has new stuff to bench.

yes & no.
yes meaning..it's great and will hold up
no meaning..if you dont insulate the cpu hold down and the cpu socket with foam good..the water buildup from the phase being turned off will eventually over run the board.

Alright.  I have insulated the board with liquid tape pretty well.  The back side has a roughly 5"x8" square covered.  The front of the board is coated around the outer perimeter of the socket exending over to the memory sockets, down to the NB heatsink, and over to the inductors.  I will look for some moldable eraser to better insulate around the socket and retention mechansim.  I will also be looking for some foam for around the cold plate.  I will have to wait for the phase change unit to arrive before I know exaclty what I will need in the way of foam and hold-down hardware.

So, for the front of the board, effectively, I only have a perimeter 1/2" to 3/4" around the socket insulated coated.  Should I remove the NB heatsink and insulate coat a larger area?

about a 5x5 square would be enough of liquid tape.
but the foam is the main part.if it's not insulated with foam, you will get condensation on the liquid tape and it will in turn run off in to the vreg at some point. thus ending your board.

side note.
if the phase change arm isnt insulated well, the ice buildup will run straight down in to the cpu socket and spill over on to the board as well.

once you address those two parts...phase is pretty much good to go for a very long time.

So I thought all the 2600K chips were the same as far multi goes. But it seems that is not correct. Gunslinger is selling 1 limited to 54x I have 1 limited to 59x and another that seems to have no limit. I set it to 70 and though of course it did not boot it allowed me to set it there and it tried to boot. Whats the deal?

I wouldn't care if the board did fail.  Actually, I hope it eventually does.  If it doesn't fail, then I'm not pushing it hard enough.    But, of course I don't want to help set it up for disaster.

Alright, I removed the CPU retention mechanism, coated the board right up to the socket and coated the capacitors at the center of the socket.  I will pack the socket pins with vaseline and slap it together.

The rest of the thermal insulation (foam -- not electrical insulation [which I have already done]), I will sort out when the phase unit arrives on Monday.
