Keep working on them Halo...Parents that is.  They may not see any value in the actual end product, but sell them on the fact that it helps you to develop real world problem solving skills using mathematics, physics, geometry, engineering....the list goes on;)

Actually my dad is pretty supportive of me learning to build phase units surprisingly enough. I would need someone else to charge them as I'm not HVAC certified though. Ideally I'd build a little SS for 24/7, and either a dual or triple stage for benching.

Hell, if I made a decent SS I could sell a few.

Start with a single stage, captube system.

Best bet is to pick up a complete 1/3 HP Copeland condensing unit designed for r404 or r410a and use that as your system base.

11'  of .032 I.D. captube should be a good starting point for tuning to a 200 watt load running an R290 .
you can just use Standard propane from a Bernz-o-Matic torch cylinder , just run it through a filter drier when charging to remove any possible moisture .

Youll need...
A turbo torch, 5% silver brazing rods, flux, a set if manifold gauges and hoses, a Multimeter with temperature measurement ability, tubing cutter, a couple schrader valves, captube, Filter drier, cpu evaporator, and an old refrigeration compressor to use as a vacuum pump.

That should about cover the basics....

Yep was looking at a 1/3 or 1/2 HP Tecumseh compressor, with an 11-12' captube.

Thanks for the shopping list, was planning on using the Chilly1 2009 evap kit, filter drier, gauge manifold, captube and schrader valves from UnderTheIce.com. And my dad is looking for the vacuum pump, which shouldn't be too hard to find reasonably cheap.

If I have any questions is it alright to PM you Rbieze?

i would talk to drewmister first...
and the chilly1 is old school and out of date. you want a kyal evap(i thinks thats the name)
and you want something in the 3/4 hp range. we are using rotarys, but they are noisy. the rec are much quieter and can be restarted quicker.

It's kayl evaps.

Also you probably knew this Halo, but rotaries are cheaper than reciprocating. But like John said, rotaries are alot more noisy. You just have to prioritize, $ or noise.

Here's the two I'm looking at for a SS:

For my dream of building a cascade I'd use 2 or 3 of either of those, or possibly 2 or 3 of the 3/4HP models. I haven't yet found a place to get condensors though, or the heat exchangers needed for a cascade. I know RunMC has them on his site, but not sure how good that one is.

I go downstairs in my basement and finally come out and were going phase now.  excellent.  I should go down there more often ;)

I have like 30 lbs of copper down there.  Its been keeping me busy

i would not go lower than 1/2hp and that is pushing it. 3/4 is a nice spot to hold temps on even a 980x (to a degree)

What about for a cascade? Would like an idea of shopping lists for a few designs:

-40C 300W load SS
-50C 300W load SS
-100C 300W load Dual stage cascade
-150C 300W load Triple stage cascade

Will probably start out by doing a SS or two, then try a dual/triple. I'd use the SS for 24/7, and the cascade for benching obviously.

Taking a guess here: http://www.supremecondensers.com/index.php

Am I anywhere close to the right kind of condenser? If so could I use Honda/Toyota?

your making your job hard. just get a dual condenser from drewmeister for like 100 bucks., hell..the single will hold a 1/3 or a 1/2 compressor.

talking about his cube condensers.
