Q if the gpu is kicking in on the phys test, try disabling phys in nvidia control panel.

It is disabled.  But cpu 2 test bombs out with a black screen and the 295 has a red led light on.  So, the gpu is involved somehow, even though physx is disabled.  One time I got all the way through the cpu test 2 (killer run), only to have it bomb out at the very last moment (feels like those old physx-on runs we used to do with the 920, but physx is disabled?)

Power supply, I know  pcp%c if you can try a seperate psu for GPU.
I think even though noy using phys it still ramps up the GPU.
 Thats my .02

you can either try to drop the over clock by 5 mhz or try adding some southbridge voltage to compensate...speculation of course.

they said 44 and up had issues...from what i read...im back down to 1j...but then i dont have a 980x either though.

Can not use below 44 for a 980X, except the experimental 23 that I have.

A quick note on the 470/480 and overclocking it, unlike most cards this one sets to what you set it too except on gpu (shader is what you actually set) is a odd number it will set to the next even number.
Also if display driver crashes and recovers a reboot is not necessary simply reset with precision (may others too) and your good to go.
