Before I do an RMA/replacement through Newegg, my 5TB WD Black drive has been making a weird noise ONLY when shutting down. The disks slow down normally but then a noise almost exactly like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpsdrIa4wjM happens.

Is this cause for concern or is it normal? The HDD makes NO noise during normal use/operations. This is literally only after the entire PC has powered down and the drive is still slowing/shutting down.

May be normal, dunno..All I can tell you is to refer to the WD Knowledge Base and Community concerning 'noise' (or other search term) or contact WD Support in the link.

That wasn't my recording but I've seen a few people with the same issue. Is it detrimental in the long run? I have 10 days left to start a return with Newegg and the only thing I have on it is maybe 30GB of recordings (I record 1440p at 70fps so it's only like 5 recordings).

Let me reiterate that this is ONLY after powering off. The disks spin down and then that noise occurs for maybe a second and that's it. I can still read/write from it, it's still recognized, etc.

NO OTHER SOUNDS come from the drive. No clicking, beeps, etc. that is the ONLY noise.

I know my Toshiba HDD makes a very audible but brief click on shutdown and sleep, but it works perfectly fine..Heads parking..My particular WD's are silent.

Not blowing you off here, but you would probably get a better answer by going to the WD Community and inquiring there or contacting WD Support..They're all about drives..If in doubt, then return it according to Newegg's return policy..But I'm going to say the noise is perfectly normal and it's head parking like my Toshiba.

And as stated in the WD Knowledge Base, Normal drive sounds include: Hard clicks during a head park operation (shutdown or sleep mode)

I've got 3 WD 2TB Blacks plus a Toshiba 5TB sitting right here next to me in an enclosure.  I can't recall hearing much noise from them during shutdown.  They are a bit noisy during read/write.   My Toshiba drive is really noisy, but again, I cant recall hearing that "spin down" noise that was on the video.

I'll try to pay closer attention to them when I power everything down.

Thanks, I just made an account and am posting there.
This is the link in-case you want to follow it/learn something new if they give decent information: https://community.wd.com/t/shutdown-noise-with-wd-black-5tb-rma-replace-it/185309

It's more of a squealing noise & I hear that head parking is more of a "click" so I'm not sure.

Let me know what you find/if you hear the same thing. As long as it's not detrimental in the long run, I can deal with it. Thank you for the reply.

Since forgot to pay attention last night when I shut everything down, I pulled the Toshiba out and went through a couple of cycles and stuck my ear next to the enclosure.   At powering down, there is a very, very faint sound of the drives spinning down.  Even louder at start up when they spin up.
