I bought my 1080 when it was released and had no real issue regarding thermals. I use my rig for school, work, and gaming. I have an x99 motherboard, so if my gpu decides to fail I won't be able to access my homework. Should I be worried about my GPU bursting into flames or will the new bios update keep that from happening?

There's probably a low chance of your card actually bursting into flames or being damaged, but with that being said, many people here and on other forums have experienced issues. There is a vBIOS update that you should apply, but be warned that when you do, the card becomes audibly louder anytime you run a program that uses it. If the vBIOS update by itself solved the issue, EVGA wouldn't be sending out thermal pads on top of it as well.

Thanks for your input! I updated the vbios the day they were released and haven't noticed a change in audible levels. It could be due to my hyper x cloud 2 headset though.

My 1080SC blew out, started with a black screen and crash a few times then all the card did was the leds flashed off and on then I removed it reinstalled and had nothing, tried with another PC and card was dead, wasn't a PC issue my 980ti works perfectly fine in it. I did the BIOS update but didn't have the thermal pads to do that. Nothing overclocked on it and I even had precision running at aggressive settings.

It's hit or miss on failure I think, I never had any heat issues

I can confirm that if you did install the recommended VBIOS then you are all set.  If you do want to install the optional thermal mod kit then we do have that available, but it is completely optional.  http://www.evga.com/thermalmod/

Thanks Chris, the cards in for RMA already, I'm just waiting for it to be shipped. I've had EVGA cards for as long as I can remember, you guys do a great job and stand by your product like no other company does! When my 7 year old 8800GT with lifetime warranty died you guys updated it to a 750ti, who else would do that?

I have the same headset. Blocks fan noise nicely. Also the best cans for the price range. Outstanding really. I also have not noticed at all any fan sound increase since new BIOS.
