Just to update in case anyone comes across this thread in the future. I followed the advice of using the spreading technique with about a pea-sized amount of paste and my temps have improved even further. I'm satisfied now.
before mod -> after mod
Idle: 32C -> 32C
Load: 65C -> 63C
I can confirm that a little more paste than you think you need turns out to be better than too little. The difference can be 2-3 degrees in my experience. Not a huge deal, but why wouldn't you want the best if you're going through the trouble?
