What he means is that the higher the FPS, the harder the GPU has to work given the same game and same settings.
 
E.g. I carry two buckets of water (60FPS), it's hard (hot). I carry four buckets of water (144FPS), it's very hard (even hotter).

I guess i was expecting more of a detailed explanation rather than "Utilising more of your card will make it run hotter."
i mean no offence but that's like telling someone the faster they run the more energy they use.

Please note my core clock is -200 and my memory clock is - 502 (as far downclocked as MSI afterburner will allow)
As i explained, my Geforce Gtx 980ti would run 144Hz with 200+fps on many games i play and the fans hardly had to work at all, the temps we're low.
 
What i'm experiencing with this card is that unless i use V-sync, my games temperature and Usage is through the roof in comparison to older cards and that
unless i'm willing to play with my card sounding like a WW1 fighter plane i'm pretty much stuck. So ideally i wanted to know really why this card demands so much just for a slight increase in monitor fresh rate when the card itself boasts for being the best card available for high resolution multiple display (would be a good time to point out that i run a single display also)

Okay, I guess that is the point he was trying to make, that makes sense yes.
 
I'm just confused trying to understand how this card fails to perform stability wise with my 980ti with such little increase in performance.
I'm not sure if you've played it but World of warcraft isnt much of a demanding game really, i mean when i was waiting for this card to arrive i was playing it with onboard graphics, sure the quality wasn't great but i managed to run it at 60+fps as well as play youtube music videos in the back ground.
 
I can put up with it on Warcraft as the noise from the fans isn't too bad. however unless my volume on battlefield 1 is very high or i wear headphones (and my 2 house mates can put up with the noise in the gaming room) its unbearable. My house mate Shaun is currently playing overwatch on a 144Hz monitor at 250 average fps on a GTX 980ti and his fans sound so quiet (note he has the same case and fan layout as me)

GPU usage at 100% (or really, higher than 95%) is ideal when VSYNC is off. Limiting the FPS by using VSYNC or a FPS target (precisionX) will typically reduce the GPU load unless the game/settings are more than the card can handle.
 
However, hotter than 90C is an issue. 80C is hot, but within specs. If your fans are spinning at 100% and the GPU core is hitting 85C, then there is an issue. Try removing the side of your case to see if temps drop significantly - if they do, you need better airflow for your card. If temps stay roughly the same, then RMA the card if you aren't comfortable repasting the TIM.

Thanks, I have removed the side of the case earlier through the day and unfortunately there wasn't much of a decrease in temperature (we're talking 1C - 2C ) I guess the CPU Usage would be higher then as its trying to perform at its best, i will try limiting the FPS by using FPS Target on (PrecisionX) and see if that improves things. I guess if 80C is within the the specs then i'll try a fan curve that can deal with that without sounding so loud. As its a more demanding card i guess maybe i could try improving airflow rather than going for RMA.

Have you tried capping the fps to 120 and setting vsync to "fast sync" in NVCP, just for the sake of testing? To see what the temps are with that setup?

the card is defective, bad seating, bad chip, bad cooler... it may be anything, dont be surprised
getting too hot (over 80c) it will start to throttle down, going down in gpu usage

if you cant achieve 100% usage with 79c and fans at 70-80% return it
gpus are designed to be run at 100% if needed

I had a 970 SSC 2.0+ that died at 90C, on the same day I bought it. I miss my Fallout4 card.... 
Return the card if you can or contact eVGA to setup an RMA.

Below is my GPU usage and temp (top left corner) with V-Sync mode in NVCP set to "fast" and also the refresh rate and FPS limited to 120.
I have a strong feeling this card is defective, it is the only card i have ever had to actually tweak and mess around with other than just slotting it in and enjoying it.
 
otherwise like you mentioned Sir Petus - GPU running at 100% i'm looking at 85C+ temperatures and very noisy fans.
It could well be it needs more thermal paste, but for the sake of spending twice the amount it would cost to buy a state of the art game console i just want it to preform as it should without me needing to have to take the whole thing apart to fix what shouldn't need fixing a week after unboxing
 

 
I shall continue to monitor this post and the forums for any possible fixes or updates however the likely hood is me probably RMA whether i can get a good replacement or just a refund to purchase another EVGA 10 series card
