Good afternoon

I'm not having much luck browsing online so i thought i would find someone who may be able to help me on here. i have recently upgraded from a evga gtx 980 ti to a evga gtx 1080 SC card.
I've noticed that when i'm playing games such as WoW or Battlefield 1 in 144hz my GPU ussage is around 70% and my temperatures are between 80 - 90!

When i set my games to run in 60Hz my GPU usage is around 40% and my temperatures are 60-70, also without V-Sync enabled my temperatures fly sky high and my fans are working at 100%.
Now i have decent cooling in my case. i have 2 front fans, 1 back fan as well as a fan on my CPU heat sync. i was able to play my games with my 980ti comfortably and never heard the fans at all.

I understand there is a problem with the fans at the moment, i have downloaded the BIOS update but its had no effect. The fans seem to be very loud when at 80%+ speed and because i only get this problem on a high refresh rate i am assuming this could be fixed with a driver or another BIOS update possibly?

my only other alternative is to RMA the card (which i 1 want to avoid as I've already just gone 2 weeks without a card after selling my old one).

I hope someone can help!
Thanks

Sounds like you need to redo the thermal paste on your card.

The problem is, I've only had this card for a week, and at first i put up with the fan revving however looking into the issue i noticed my temps are only higher when running a higher than 60Hz refresh rate, I've never had to paste a card before and i'm not really comfortable in doing so. Seeing as i bought this a week ago i find it difficult to understand how it cant be pasted correctly or efficient enough to do what its designed to do

Bad thermal paste applications can happen directly from the factory.

Okay, i don't feel comfortable applying thermal paste to the card, and i would much rather RMA a faulty card then to tamper with it to get it to work.
I don't want to cause any further damage or potentially ruin the warranty on it, as your a Moderator i'm assuming you've dealt with this problem previously and the paste is usually the issue?

I'm happy to wait for a fix however if EVGA are unsure of why the cards are having these issues i would rather replace for another model or refund to buy another brand of EVGA card.

What would you suggest?

Since you're not comfortable redoing the paste yourself I would recommend rma'ing your card. Another option would be to take your card to a local computer repair shop to have them redo the paste for you.

Okay, thanks for your advice - do you know why the refresh rate can cause such high GPU usage and temperatures?

It just baffles me that i can run my games on ultra with brilliant FPS with 60Hz refresh rate, but even fps capped at 144fps on 144Hz refresh it's so demanding?
In comparison to my 980ti after a year of purchasing it, it still ran such lower temps and far less GPU usage, i don't understand personally how that could be down to bad thermal paste.

Utilizing more of your card will make it run hotter.

Lol...

Not sure what is so funny. Anyone who runs a gpu at 60 fps capped vs 144 fps capped on air is going to see a temp difference.
