So I submitted a request for the thermal pads for a EVGA GTX 1070 SC Black Edition. The black edition does NOT come stock with a backplate and the backplate is a big factor in the thermal pad fix.

Please include a backplate in the thermal pad fix for all Black Editions users.

My understanding is that the reference board design with the black edition doesn't have any issues.  You're not likely to get a backplate as that wasn't EVGA's offer.  Also, you'd be better served contacting EVGA directly for answers.

You must be blind. The GTX 1070 SC Black Edition (08G-P4-5173) is listed as one of the models that are defective and has the IDENTICAL PCB board and ACX 3.0 cooler design as all the other 1070 units that are having issues. I would recommend you do some research before posting here again.

The fact that EVGA didn't originally include a backplate on the Black Edition units is irrelevant now as it is REQUIRED for the thermal pad fix.

The good news is you don't need the thermal pads at all.

Are you just trolling me or did you just wake up right now? The BIOS "hack" that EVGA is offering simply runs the fans at a higher speed and is unacceptable as the VRMs are still running much hotter than normal. It does not solve the defective cooler design, only the thermal pad fix will and this thermal pad fix REQUIRES a backplate.

http://forums.evga.com/How-to-apply-the-Thermal-Pads-for-the-10701080-Cards-m2573413.aspx

Only if you have a backplate. The midplate one can be applied without a backplate.

Also, I'm not a thermoengineer, but without a backplate the backside of you VRMs actually cool BETTER than a card with a backplate since those had an air gap between the PCB and backplate - which makes for poor thermal conductivity. Without a backplate to begin with, your card is cooled better on the backside!

Not trolling at all. Taken from www.evga.com/thermalmod ... "For those users who want additional cooling beyond the VBIOS update, EVGA has optional thermal pads available. This update is not required, however; EVGA will make it available free of charge to any customer who is interested."

Wrong. The thermal pad fix IS required as the VRMs are still running significantly hotter than they should even with increased fan speed (and noise on top of that). They are including the large thermal pad for the back since the backplate acts as an additional heatsink to solve this problem.
