Have you tried the latest nVidia hotfix driver? 375.76?

Since updating the BIOS on my 1070 FTW it looks like the GPU doesn't downclock any more (even when I set it to power saving mode in the nvidia control panel) and the fans are now running all the time? My temp was 32C and the fans were still running...is this normal?

First post updated with 1080/1070 FTW Secondary BIOS and Classified BIOS.

Hi. Noob questions: I have a 1080 FTW. If I don't plan to use the Secondary BIOS, should I update it anyway? What are the advantages of the Secondary BIOS?

if you are not using the secondary BIOS, then no need to update it.

yes it should, can you ensure all background apps are closed?

I have a noobie question.
Should I turn the bios switch from 1 to 2 before flashing the bios 2? and vice versa?

yes

To answer my own question above: if you are unsure whether your new card, purchased after 11/01/2016, will have the thermal pads and bios update installed, you can apparently go to EVGA's quest RMA and enter the s/n of your card there - this should tell you if the mods are needed or if they are already in place. I will update as soon as I receive my new card. Won't be for another two weeks though.

Just want to post something positive here.

I installed vBIOS ok for my GTX 1080 FTW but as my card is so new (October purchase) and I wasn't comfortable doing the thermal pad myself, I decided to pull trigger on RMA.
The longest wait was getting through, *2 calls ahead* but once I got through and confirmed my details, I was put on the que for advanced RMA , just waiting for my invoice to be verified.

The rep confirmed the RMA card will have thermal pads installed and the  latest vbios flashed.
He also told me the RMA box will come with a self addressed postage paid box for shipment back to EVGA.

Up here in Canada, shipping GFX cards as hefty as the 1080 FTW would easily run me $50+ and probably more since the holiday busy season is coming up.  It was a super nice gesture by EVGA to pay for my postage back to them.

I also asked about if I'll get new or refurbished and he confirmed I'll get new since my purchase was recent.  Albeit it may come in an RMA box  (hope it's ok for resale in a few years?)

Unless the RMA process itself falls apart or something unexpected comes up, I think this is the best customer service I've received.

I was an EVGA user on my old GTX 260 and went with MSi for the 700 and 900 series.  This whole thermal thing almost moved me away from EVGA, but it may well keep me with them for the 11 series or 12 series card, whenever I choose to upgrade.

Thumbs up.  Fingers crossed on smooth RMA for me, but pretty happy so far.

Sorry to break it to you, but there are no new cards with the fixes being produced, at least not right now. Evga themselves told me that they apply the fix to refurbished cards that they have in stock, and they will not guarantee that you get a new card. FYI I got my card on September 24th, so yeah ...

I just wouldn't trust what you were told at this point, and I'd certainly wouldn't give away my new card in the hopes that they send me a new card for replacement. If you're worried about the pads, then install them yourself. At least that way you are sure it is your own new card, and not some refurbished that comes with more problems.

At least that's what I've been told by Evga, otherwise I would have RMA ed my card as well. Can any Evga officials comment on this. Do we get new cards as replacement or not ?

In my opinion you should. If you update it now, even if you're not going to use it, you won't FORGET to update it (I'm great at forgetting stuff myself haha).

I'm fairly new at computers myself, so take it with a grain of salt.
The purpose of dual bios is the ability to easily reset settings if something goes wrong in an overclock.
If you "abuse" your primary bios and it "breaks" you're able to boot up with the secondary one and "revert the primary".
I own a 1070 FTW myself and it's both my first premium card and first dual bios card.
At least for this card, I think, the Slave bios enables higher OC potential - If I recall correct the slave bios can use a higher power target, or something or other..

Yeah if it isn't obvious, I'm not overclocking yet (or experienced with it) - BUT SOON!

Edit:
Or just listen to Jacob, and don't update it at all :p
You will be fine, not having it updated :) Especially if you're not going to use it.

My card is within 30 days so he told me it will be a new one, but possibly with work done on it to apply the fix. I'm not comfortable doing the thermal application myself which is why Im doing this and at this point , worst case, I get a 2-3 month old refurbished card with the fix applied and I can resell it later with some peace of mind.

Again, RMA still in progress and this could go belly up from a good to bad experience, but I am pretty happy with what is on offer so far.
