VBIOS updated on 08G-P4-6173-KR/KB - 1070 SC, my first VBIOS flash, quick and easy so far so good. Just wanted to say thanks to EVGA for their efforts in correcting this issue amongst all the drama and thanks to those who've kept a level head and worked as a community to try and aid others situations. Thermal pads awaiting shipment. Will update if I run into any issues on the new VBIOS in the meantime.

Oh well...tried three times to update bios...first time, the Command prompt just closed immediately.  Then made sure all programs were closed and ran in Administrator mode...command prompt opened...recognized my card and then closed.  Never given an option to type Y.  Then tried in safe mode...nada.  Guess I will keep using Afterburner and keep my aggressive fan profile.

Thank you,
regarding #3, I was asking distance between parts not the pad thickness because I suspect that it is less than pad thickness because pads are very soft and manufacturers are relying flexibility to squeeze pads for better contact. If I use glued pad (0.15mm) + copper plate (0.5mm) + glued pad (0.15mm), actual distance matters.

I am sensitive about these due to my r&d job in automotive company as engine cooling engineer.

In that case being an engineer you probably have access to a micrometer. I install copper shims in tablets etc alot but i do not have one on me or i would help. The termal pads they send look like EK ones so i guess it's 3,0-5,0 W/mK wich is fine with copper plates.

Micrometer will not fit in between vrm and heatsink but can measure distance to backplate.

Just curious, are you running a AMD chipset motherboard, if so see:

Q. I have an AMD chipset motherboard, and the flash is not completing. What do I do?
A. Please contact (see main post for hyperlink to email), this will require a special update.

Now users are going to complain about fan noise.

No fan noise here at all after updating VBios. You are just guessing/hoping. Negative thoughts......Get a job and a life.

It is called sarcasm, they are a long time and well respected contributor here.

Intel X99 with i7 5820K.  Still no luck...tried it from command prompt by itself and still no flash.

EVGA GeForce GTX 1080/1070/1060 BIOS Update

  • 08G-P4-6286-KR - EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 FTW ACX 3.0 - Primary BIOS (86.04.3b.00.84) | Secondary BIOS Coming Soon
  • This doesn't work.

Checked this s/n against that on the side of the box... yes. Set BIOS to Primary... yes. Ran the update... yes. Rebooted... yes. Check bios revision in NV Control Panel and GPU Z... yes. Everything checks out.

Except the fans don't spin. Nada, Zilch. Nothing. Dead still. Not a damn thing. Had to switch to the Slave BIOS to get the fans spinning at all. Afterburner was the only thing stopping the card from dying a fiery death.

What a bloody shambles. If you think I'm going to brick the secondary bios too when it comes out you've got another thing coming!

  • Primary has a 0db mode so fans will not spin unless you put a custom fan curve or switch it to slave.  This is nothing new.

I'm actually worried about fan noise.

What exactly is changed with this vbios? Could I try the newfan curve settings with PrecisionX software before installing the vbios update?

I really hope you are right... because if I really need them with no overclocking and an agressive curve fan, I think those pads are definitively not an option...

If you and i or someone else really need them or everyone EVGA would said that you have to do it, you have to aply the pads. However they said in the statement its an -option- for thoose who wants additional cooling :)

    They can't say something else.
"Oversigh"t and "optional" don't go together.

The lack of thermal pads between the VRAM and VRM components and the heatsink was an "oversight" and the thermal pads must be/place there from the beginning (the correct statement, and then you see a massive recalls/refunds)
