Do I need to get thermal pads if i update the bios?  Or are the pads optional.

They claim the pads are optional after the new vbios.
But keep this in mind. The new fan curve in the new bios dropped the VRM temps from 114c to 95c in some tests on a GTX 1080 FTW. The thermal pads alone dropped the VRM temps to 85c. Get the pads is my recomendation. Those thermal pads were supposed to be there from the start.

Yes but weren't those tests done using an extreme Furmark benchmark, in other words a test that produces much higher temperatures than anyone would ever see during regular gaming?

I done the vBIOS update and requested the thermal pads but I'm not entirely comfortable with taking a £600 graphics card apart to fit something that really should have been fitted by EVGA when I requested the RMA on my previous faulty card (with the black screen/100% fan issue) a few weeks ago. I was actually surprised that they didn't fit them to just to save on me having to return my card to them again for them to do it which is a service they offer. I know they claim it is optional but this relatively simple mod would only cost them a few pence extra at most and does appear to reduce temperatures significantly; so much so that the revised vBIOS would not have been required IMO.

I know EVGA will still honour the warranty even if I damage the card fitting the thermal pads but I still don't want to go through the hassle of yet another RMA (and another £700+ collateral fee) so soon after I'd already been through one. I will likely just continue to use my card as normal and if it should fail again due to overheating VRMs or whatever then I'll just get EVGA to replace the card there and then. I am unlikely to have this card more than a year anyway as I typically upgrade every 12-18 months.

If you see any hardware problems with your 1080 ftw, artifacts, black screen, anything, start rma don't lose time to found out whats wrong...Life is to short to found out what is wrong with somebody problems. Evga make bad mistakes on project ACX 3.0 now they have to pay for it, or lose they reputations. I always buy EVGA products and i loved how the service works.

My last four graphics card have been from EVGA but after this I suspect my next one may not be. I mean the GTX 1080 was released back in June 2016 and is now November. It took EVGA four months to admit there was a problem and that thermal pads had been omitted by mistake (at least that is my understanding). Not one professional website that reviewed the GTX 1080 FTW back at launch picked up on this and now it seems that EVGA's reputation has been damaged somewhat because people are certainly going to be asking if their future cards have addressed the black screen/100% issue and/or have thermal pads fitted before committing themselves to buying one. I know I will be far more cautious, perhaps even choosing to buy one from a different vendor that did not have the issue with their custom GTX 1080.

So my request for thermal-pads has been approved, now it says pending shipment.  I assume that means I am waiting for EVGA to get more thermal-pads before they ship mine.  There must be a lot of people requesting these.  Can I safely game in the meantime just using the new bios for my GTX 1080 FTW?  It is out of my system at the moment.

Hi there,

Is anyone able to provide an image or the values of the fan curve that this bios update provides? I would like to compare it to the fan curve im currently using.

Thanks

I tried yesterday with MSI Afterburner but when I clicked on the Fan tab and enabled it, it just showed its own default fan curve which starts at 40% fan speed. I do have EVGA PrecisionX OC installed as I do not like the revamped version since Unwinder (the coder of Afterburner) stopped developing it; IMO the interface is extremely clunky and it lacks options that Afterburner has. I suspect that EVGA PrecisionX OC will show the correct fan curve though since it is designed first and foremost for EVGA cards.

I do know that at idle on the desktop the fans do not spin so my guess is that the fans ramp up earlier at what looks like 50 C I believe rather than 65 C.

It's not just a different fan curve, it's a different maximum RPM at 100% fan. If you want to emulate it to some extent, just slide your fan curve to the left by 10C ....but it won't be the same as the bios update. The maximum speed is different.

A bit more detail info on the fan curve would be nice.

200-500rpm at 100%?

Is it the same for all cards?

I would be also very interested in the differences of the fan curves. Unfortunately EVGA doesn't tell any Details...

I own a Evga gtx 1080 SC acx 3.0 i removed the backplate. Used thermal Grizly Kryonut as paste and updatet the bios. Now my card never goes over 65.c at 50% fann speed. This is how it was ment to be inn the first plase.

I did the update on my 1080SC and so far after running the Witcher 3 for a little bit the max my gpu got to with the new fan curve was 65c, a Fan Speed % of 43 and an RPM of 1579 according to MSI Afterburner.  Given my card is in case right next to my left ear it wasn't that much louder then before.  I'm using a full tower case however with 2x 200mm fans and 2x 140mm fans so your mileage may vary but its not that bad in my opinion especially since my Witcher 3 was running at 1080p with pretty much ultra settings with hairworks on.  This is also while GPU boost brings me 130mhz over what the advertised boost clock speed is.
