Do I need to get thermal pads if i update the bios? Or are the pads optional.
They claim the pads are optional after the new vbios.
But keep this in mind. The new fan curve in the new bios dropped the VRM temps from 114c to 95c in some tests on a GTX 1080 FTW. The thermal pads alone dropped the VRM temps to 85c. Get the pads is my recomendation. Those thermal pads were supposed to be there from the start.
Yes but weren't those tests done using an extreme Furmark benchmark, in other words a test that produces much higher temperatures than anyone would ever see during regular gaming?
I done the vBIOS update and requested the thermal pads but I'm not entirely comfortable with taking a £600 graphics card apart to fit something that really should have been fitted by EVGA when I requested the RMA on my previous faulty card (with the black screen/100% fan issue) a few weeks ago. I was actually surprised that they didn't fit them to just to save on me having to return my card to them again for them to do it which is a service they offer. I know they claim it is optional but this relatively simple mod would only cost them a few pence extra at most and does appear to reduce temperatures significantly; so much so that the revised vBIOS would not have been required IMO.
I know EVGA will still honour the warranty even if I damage the card fitting the thermal pads but I still don't want to go through the hassle of yet another RMA (and another £700+ collateral fee) so soon after I'd already been through one. I will likely just continue to use my card as normal and if it should fail again due to overheating VRMs or whatever then I'll just get EVGA to replace the card there and then. I am unlikely to have this card more than a year anyway as I typically upgrade every 12-18 months.
