May I ask what the shipping date on your card was? Just saw the article on Yahoo about this and my shipping date was 6-17 so kinda concerned mine is part of it. I have a backup card so losing it for 2 weeks is ok as long as it gets fixed.

Here is from my Product Page:  Sad to say you do fall into the danger zone if the before 8/30 manufacturing date holds weight

Can you link us the article? EVGA only mentioned shipping dates regarding 1080 FTWs.

As for this picture, it is very unfortunate to see a component burn, but this is on the back side of the card compared to the others having part pop on the front side of the card.

My question is, what actually happened here? It was perfect timing to start it and have the video capture this failure.

Also, for everyone else interested, never block the fan with another component. Move the sound card further down so your gpu can breath. (not related to the failure, just something to note for others).

Agreed with you there, I would never want something that close to my fans either.  However that seems to be PCIe X1 slot its plugged into which a lot of boards including mine only have 1 of.  Mine happens to be two slots below my upper x16 slot though so I would be in a better situation.  Just wanted to point that out for people concerned about it.

@NucleusX last night I dismantled my 1080 and looked for this "gap" issue. To my surprise, there was not a single gap. Also, the VRM have been attached to the midplate via just such a thermal pad.

So, just a few facts:
FACT: There are indepdendent reports of gaps with the thermal pads on the VRAM. As I can claim that there is not such a gap on my card, this hints to a QC issue with the manufacturer.
FACT: There are claims that there is NO cooling of the VRM whatsoever. As I do not want to believe I got some sort of miracle unit where out of a sudden the manufacturer decided to patch in a strip of thermal pad, there is at least a inadequate, passive cooling solution (the VRM transfering heat to the midplate, a comparatively big surface where the fans blow on).

@OP please do not throw in several issues together. There has been already a official announcement of a bad batch of VRM. Without knowing the shipment date of your card I would suggest you check with EVGA if the card has been manufactured before 8/30. If yes, there is a chance it is part of the faulty batch. This is not an "overheating" issue. This is an issue of a part of the chips on the PCB being not up to par and thus not able to withstand the specified wear.

Just so you understand: The "ticking timebomb" is not caused by overheating. It is caused by bad VRM that wear out really fast. The logical conclusion is that everyone having a card manufactured in the timeframe before 8/30 should consider a RMA request, linking to this announcement and requesting a new replacement to prevent this from happening OR a return to the reseller if possible OR taking the risk that your unit might be not part of the affected 4% of the bad batch.

Where was this official announcement? do you mean the 1070 issues ALL manufacturers had with micron memory cards?

PCIe x1 cards can go into PCIe x16 slots, so they can be moved down as long as there is not 2 gpu's installed. It would just reduce x16 lane 1 to x8

Yeah... Like I said, those manufacturing dates only apply to the 1080 FTW.
The 1070 FTW had no faulty VRM issue.

They are doing a advanced RMA for me. I just have to wait on stock to come available. Basically they are sending me a card first then returning this old card when that new one arrives. I can't complain about that. Being disabled I saved for months and months for a new card so I gotta take advantage of the RMA and I'd rather be safe then sorry especially knowing my luck!

If the 1070 has no issue then why are they issuing RMA's for the 1070s like mine no questions asked or offering up the pads? The tech guy I just talked to at EVGA even admitted the 1070s have an issue with the VRM. They are having issues with the 1070 per EVGA tech so I think I'll trust them.

Because maybe the 1070 issues weren't as widespread as the 1080s.
An EVGA tech has said, on this forum, only the 1080 FTWs had a 3-4% faulty VRM rate.

Regarding the thermal pads, that has nothing to do with faulty VRMs.
