Hello all. Just wanted to add one voice -- not overly impressed with this:
http://www.evga.com/thermalmod/default.asp#request

Glad to see something is being offered for free without having to send the card in, however this does not drive confidence in an expensive top-end product. I have this card in one of the new Lian Li motorized standing desks (DK-04x http://www.lian-li.com/en/dt_portfolio/dk-04/). The concern I now have going forward is my case blows all air toward the intake (fan) side of the card without any horizontal flow along the PCB backplate. I don't have any space around water gear, aesthetic interest, or time to rig up additional fans. Even with the new pads ensuring transfer to the plate, where will the heat go / what will draw it off? I know most cases have horizontal cross-flow, but some blow bottom-to-top or have similar layout to mine. If not past my return period I would probably have returned the card for peace of mind / reliability with my case setup... I bought it believing it was an over-engineered upgrade to a reference model and now will eye it every time it's under load.

Be worried yes.  PLEASE don't listen to BCAVNAUGH.  This dude has been nothing but a pain since I came to this forum a couple of days ago after having my own card burn out.  All I see is them telling people not to worry etc.  DO worry, don't listen to bcavnaugh or any of the other beings on this forum trying to downplay the problem.

There's two separate issues. One is the VRM/Memory running hotter than other models, and the other being a couple of cards having failing SMD components on the back side on the GPU. One is probably not related to the other.

Cool story bro!  You are just another one of the problems. Nobody cares to hear yours or anyone else excuses here. There is a MAJOR ISSUE happening with EVGA right now.  If all goes well I will get my refund today as the managers don't work on the weekends and I will be gone from this site for good.  My whole intention at this point is to help people see passed all the BS that is being spread here and to allow people to make up their own minds and not just buy into some PR crap. I would not even be here if I didn't have problems personally.

Cool story bro. However, your problem is what I said is accurate. There are only a couple of reports of actual component failure scattered around the net. If you have more examples, lets see them. Apparently the only story that can be told is your version and everyone else is a liar and everyone else needs to shut up.  Frankly I find that offensive. How about you demonstrate your sincerity and show us the MAJOR ISSUE of components failing on the cards. I personally can't find them. Help me out, 'bro'.

Thankfully one of the good moderators here was kind enough to PM me and set my mind at ease a bit about this whole situation finally getting handled appropriately.  If you don't see the numerous threads here, reddit or just google itself then that is your own problem to deal with.  Meanwhile you can just go back to defending something you have no business defending for whatever personal reason you have.

Good day.

In other words, no. Thanks for your honesty in admitting that.

If you mean no as in I am saying no to arguing and worrying about all this anymore then you are correct.  My whole goal was to not allow this to get swept under the carpet and more innocent people like me getting screwed over due to lack of information.  This awesome mod that PMed me gave me the whole scoop and set my mind at ease to at least lay off it for now.  In the mean time you don't even have a pascal card so you can really just stay out of all of it.

Nope. I'm going to point out you have nothing to back your claim there is a MAJOR ISSUE with VRM components failing across all EVGA GTX 1080 and 1070's GPUs. You advocated for others to REFUSE to buy EVGA products based on your claims. I think it is entirely reasonable that you back up your claims. Mods are not official spokespersons and frankly I doubt your PM even exists as EVGA would not release official product info in that manner. And a thermal pad isn't going to correct an issue with SMD components failing on the back side of the GPU.

EVGA will make things right for the customer. That is the bottom line. If you have an older GTX 1080 FTW card and you want to have EVGA exchange this with a card that has the thermal material on the VRMs all you have to do is contact EVGA and request an RMA. All of the newer GTX 1080 FTW cards have these installed by default now from the factory.

If you feel confident about putting on the thermal material yourself you can also do that.

It's your choice. If you are unsure please contact EVGA technical support for further info and advice.

Of note, I have an older GTX 1080 FTW card and my case has massive airflow. I have not had any black screen problems or any other issues. I might order the thermal material and do this myself if the instructions are clear.

Awesome thanks :)  I didn't have any blackscreens or anything either.  Just one day it fried on me. Id personally suggest applying the mod simply so you aren't without a card for a period of time.  I was happy to hear my replacement will be one of the newer ones with the mod installed already so it eases my mind quite a bit.

I'll have to 2nd that. The guy PM'd me recently cause he wanted to save me public embarrassment and interrogated me on my intentions
by posting in threads about my concerns revolving round all this, and even insinuated that i hated EVGA for doing so. Also told me that he
spent 3 hours looking through my history of all of my posts as if i was a suspect or something. I have my pm's switched off now.

lol, what an immature to pm me about then rack off leaving it like that. Get this straight pal.I don't hateEVGA, i
love what they did with the 700 and 900 series, and their PSU's arespectacular. Why would i hatethem if I own many
products from EVGA. most of them arn't even registered btw. What i hate, ishow they'vehandled Pascal. They made
a potential monster, then ran it into the ground with deep flaws, and I know they can do better. Not sugar coating it.

Aren't PM,s meant to stay private? If there is any dispute with a PM then a Mod should be contacted.

so let me get this straight. i buy an evga card because if something goes wrong with it, evga will replace.

a few people have defective cards and evga replaces them.

so now i'm supposed to worry because my card might blow up and evga will replace it?

i thought that was why i bought evga in the first place.

either you own your possessions or your possessions own you.

if you are so butt hurt and offended that an expensive video card you purchased failed, maybe you shouldn't have spent so much money on it.

judging from some of the recent comments in the 10 series forums, i'm thinking maybe an rx460 would better suited for their temperament.

But if they get the AMD 480 they can't use the driver fix that cut performance and 'fixed' the over spec power draw on the PCIe slot...just to be fair.
I sure wish AMD had more competitive products in both GPU and CPU. If you want the top end, there is only one choice right now.

EVGA support is excellent, you need to get it replaced, no problem
Need a new VBIOS, no problem
Need thermal pads, no problem

I use MX-4 and it works fine with whatever

Not sure how what the thermal conductivity is for EVGA's pads
