I was playing Shadow Warrior 2 and then suddenly the whole PC just shut down itself. I could see the sparkle inside the case which of course it freaked me out, a lot. Chemical smoke was coming out from the case (It smelt horribly) and I was still not sure which part is faulty until now, it's my EVGA FTW GTX 1070 which I bought it from Amazon. I can still smell the stench on the burned mark of the backplate.

If I am not mistaken, the place of the burned mark is where VRMs belong which has created a lot of popular and controversial topic on Internet. I never overclock my GPU because it is not necessary in my case and I am a bit afraid of breaking it.

This is my first EVGA Graphics Card and unfortunately it gives me a horrible and terrifying experience which I never have before with the other Graphics Cards.

Just post this thread to create awareness though.

I can't tell what country you're in but submit an RMA as fast as possible.

Yup. I've contacted the customer support and they gave me the ticket number easily.
Max temp is 78C but it's cooler than mine previous card (ASUS GTX 770) which is around 81-82C. I'd been using my old card for at least 2 years with no problem so far.

I live in Malaysia (SEA region) and from I heard from the customer support, they said that I have to RMA it to Taiwan, not US though.

that's the real problem with the VRM temps, you can't read them just as easy as the GPU temps.
even if the GPU is running normal the VRMs could be as hot as hell and you don't realize it until it smells.
it's a real bad situation right now, no idea if EVGAs move with the free thermal pads will really solve the issue.

I wonder if this VRM issue is only effecting those with backplates? i could see a spark happening if the backplate touches in the wrong way

my 1070 SC Black Edition doesn't have a backplate.
