Could someone also explain what the thermal pads are and why they are required(?)

The thermal pads will help keep the card cooler. The thermal pads aren't required, the pads are optional.

My 1080 FTW is overclocked and has been 100% solid under daily gaming use with no issues since launch day. I have requested the thermal pads and will be installing them whenever they turn up along with some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for the GPU TIM.

Wouldn't it be better to suggest a "better be safe than sorry" approach? The VRMs will work fine until they don't and then they will burn up rapidly. Applying the thermal pads will keep those cooler and thus reduce any risk of the card destroying itself.

I agree with you on the safer than sorry approach. I was just stating what evga has already said. http://www.evga.com/thermalmod/
