1T is faster and maybe less stable than 2T on the memory, and there is a difference. Will you see the difference in everyday usage or just benchmarks??? So if you have to get it stable go with 2T.
I have used 2 sticks of 8gb G.Skill 1866. I would think two 8gb dual rank dual channel, would be close to three sticks of single rank triple channel. X58 can't do quad, but on my x79, quad channel would be better than dual channel, dual rank memory. Not to confuse you...
At least it seems with memory intensive BOINC primegrid work units.
How that equates to gaming????
If you can't get the speed, tighten timings, including T2 down to T1*. (*maybe less stable)
