Is it safe to remove the backplate of the gtx 1080 acx 3.0 SC ?  And is it going to lower the gpu temp if it is removed ?

Hello,

100% safe and should not change the running temperature of your card nor will it impact performance.

Do we need the back-plate??   better temp? worser temp?  or is it just for the astetiks??

Backplate definitely isn't required, however, if you choose to remove it make sure you keep it in a safe place just in case you need to rma the card in the future. The card must be returned to original condition before rma'ing.

Not so sure on this one. If there where already pads on the back of the PCB, then those pads where sinking heat
to specific area's of the back-plate. But on the other hand, back-plates can cause heat traps in other areas. It's
usually worth it in the end to remove them if you have a nice airflow from the front panel to blow over it.

Anyeone test without the back plate?

Air its a pretty poor heat conductor, Aluminium is way more efficient when conducting heat.
IF, you put thermal pads between the the back of the PCB and the backplate, heat dissipation should be improved a bit over the PCB without backplate.

But only the PCB with or without backplate, should be no difference.
Thermal pads will not cool the cards, will only transfer heat to the backplate in a more efficient way than air does.

The backplate has the serial number, so definitely make sure to keep it close like Sajin stated.

The backplate also protects the delicate components on the back side of the GPU PCB.

If you remove it...be extra careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card!
