Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone that may be considering purchasing a laptop built by EVGA.

I am writing this post from my 3rd SC-17. All 3 were either delivered with, or developed bright white spots on the display that I believe are "pressure marks" from hardware behind the screen pressing on the display. The first laptop came out of the box this way, the second starting showing these marks after the second day of use, and finally the one I am currently using showed these "markings" just tonight after about 3 weeks. I will include a picture that shows what these marks look like. There are 2 important things to note about the marks. They are only visible on dark-ish backgrounds (blacks and blues), and all the marks on all 3 laptops have been in 1 of two places. These spots are either on the very right-middle portion of the display, or mirrored on the left-middle portion.

I carry this laptop with me everyday to work using the included EVGA backpack. However, it seems that this laptop was never designed to actually be portable. If my typical everyday use has caused these marks then I believe this product needs to be recalled. I baby my electronics and this nearly $3000 laptop is no exception.

I will say that EVGA customer service has been more than helpful and prompt with sending me replacement laptops, but unfortunately I think this issue stems from a design flaw, rather than just a few faulty units. The manufacturing tolerances behind the display are just too tight, and are causing permanent damage to the screen.

Based on my experience, unless you are planning to never move this laptop from your desk, you should look elsewhere for an enthusiast grade portable computer.

I am still looking for a picture of the first laptop I ever received, but I was able to find a picture of the first replacement EVGA sent me.

This showed up on the screen after only 2 days of having the laptop in my possession, during which it sat at home and was used for probably 3 hours in total.

As you can see this is exactly the same mark I showed in the OP, but mirrored to the left side of the screen. The first laptop I received had the marks in exactly the same spot as this one, while the laptop I have now has the marks on the right side.

Dear ponkey,

Thank you for your post.  I would like to confirm that this is highly abnormal and not something that we have seen previously on other SC17 products.

I assure you that we are here to help and I will be following up with your email in a little bit.

Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply. I have no doubt, based on my past experiences, that you guys will make this right. However, now that I've personally seen 3 laptops all display the same marks, in the same shape, on the same areas of the screen I don't believe that this is highly abnormal as you said.

When it comes to using this laptop I'm not sure how I could be using it any more "normally". In fact, I would say that based on my own anecdotal evidence, I am much more cautious with my devices than any of my friends. I mean, I'm the guy who's never shattered a phone screen, or had a HDD in a laptop fail due to a drop or fall or whatever.

Like I've discussed with you, because I bought the original sc-17 from a reseller (ie pcrush.com / newegg.com) I'm between a rock and a hard place. Not only have my 30 days passed to get a refund, I no longer even have the original laptop they sent me with the serial number they have on file. Obviously if I could do this all over again I would have purchased the laptop directly from you guys, so that after all this I could just throw my hands up in the air, give up, get my money back, and go purchase a laptop from a manufacturer that's been in the game a little longer.

It's definitely not an issue isolated to ponkey. The first 980m model I received in July had the same issue and was showing both dots from first power on. I think they line up with the EVGA logo lighting on the cover. While support had me shut off the light it did not alleviate the display issue. EVGA replaced the laptop and the new one hasn't shown this, but I've kept the logo lights off since I got it. Maybe extended use of those lights cause damage to the screen?

Well that's pretty interesting. I was told by multiple reps that they had never even heard of this problem.

I would bet every single sc17 is susceptible to this damage, be it from the evga logo on the back or something else.

Yikes, never mind the dots, the black light bleed (BLB) is unacceptable nooo, absolutely horrid. All 3 of the laptops had that amount of BLB?

Yes they have all had that level of back light bleed. But it all honesty, BLB has never bothered me much. It definitely isn't even close to as distracting as the dots/lines.

I've been talking with Chris. I told him I would be happy to try a 1070 version if he thinks the problem has been resolved in the newer models (which he hasn't weighed in on). If the new version is going to develop the same thing I would really just prefer a refund. I have a feeling they are going to have a hard time getting pcrush.com to give me a refund, but here's to hoping.

Regardless of what solution they are able to offer I will update this post.

Lastly, I encourage anyone who owns an sc17 to change their background to solid black and see if you are affected by the dots and or lines. We've already had another person in this thread confirm that they had the same marks, in the same shape, on the same areas of the screen.

Well, EVGA will take care of you one way or another. Would be great if they did offer you a 1070 model but with them offering a free GTX 1070 desktop card w/purchase of a 980m version, I would say they have abundant stock they are trying to move.

I am in the market for a new laptop and was considering EVGA but that BLB concerns me, it is excessive particularly for a laptop in the $2700 range not to mention you can get a Sager with a 1080 for that price.
