I was thinking about doing the step up program too for this exact scenario, but right now my 1070 FTW is working flawlessly for 1440p gaming. I think the better solution is wait a year and get another 1070 FTW when they go on sale and SLI them for way more superior performance than a single 1080.

I've submitted a step-up from a 1070 SC to the 1080 ACX 3.0 - Everything I've found shows that this will be a good upgrade. Plus, if I want something quieter I can add the Hybrid Cooler down the line. 

I too am going from the 1070 sc to the 1080 gaming acx. With all the memory issues and me seeing the flickering I think it's just better to move to a superior card for the price difference.
