Definitely worth it.  There's something to be said for more cores, faster memory, and if you get an FTW or Classy, stupidly high boost speeds to boot.  I would bypass getting a reference cooled card, and look for a SC or FTW (or if you can find one a classy) simply because the ref 1080 design is a bit under-powered for the 1080's heat output... it can throttle, and an FE 1080 is a pricey thing compared to even an FTW 1080.

Get a 1080, and FTW is the sweet spot for price - performance.

The 1080 FE, the 1080 ACX 3.0, and the 1080 BE (Blower Edition, not a FE cooler but same overall type) are the only current step up options. Rarely does EVGA throw in SC or SSC models, and I've never seen the FTW, Classified, or Kingpin editions as a step up option.

1 more question does the 1070 FTW ever out-perform the standard 1080?

Nope.

You can get somewhat close with a highly over clocked 1070 or 980 Ti, but as soon as you OC the 1080 it jumps ahead 10 to 15%.

Except if the person with the 1080 has an old CPU. Then it is possible for someone else's 1070 or 980 Ti (with a strong CPU) to beat out the other persons 1080.
