I do realize you guys say you found the problem, but we as customers deserve to know what that is. Funny thing is you don't hear of these probles with other board partners or even Founders editions for that matter. And unlike the Ftw 1080, they don't require 2 8 pin connectors to get roughly the same clocks. MSI and some others have a 6 pin and 8 pin and the basic ones have 1 8 pin. You guys are trying the trust of your loyal customers. I've owned several evga cards, a motherboard and even psu's. Makes we want to jump ship!

Rewritten
I got my RMA 1080FTW for this black screen 100% issue and looked over both cards closely. Haven't tested new one for the issue yet. The only difference I could find were 4 of the chips on the back of the card. Old one has "65KQH", new one has "66WQK". Comparison pictures here: imgur.com/a/392sd

These look like diodes to me. Probably for the power supply of the gpu chip. I highly doubt this was the problem. The different code probably is some sort of date code. Did you look under the back plate and shroud?

They are Panasonic electrolytic caps, not diodes. Google "Panasonic SP-Cap" (can't post a link due to forum restrictions)

The value/voltage rating is the same (330uF, 2V); only the lot code is different. All this means is that the new card has newer caps, but could be that the old lot was defective.

I stand corrected. These are indeed electrolytic caps. Would explain the 330 print on them.

I would like evga to make a statement about this. I'm quite interested to know what is causing the problem.

Could be dead on.

Today i rma'ed my 2 hybrid ftw cards that had the known problem. I wanted to go with evga 1080 classifieds but evga were out of stock. Found them locally.

Going with the hybrids would of saved me a ton of money in extra rads and blocks but can't hold off any longer. Could not wait for when they get more hybrids back in stock..

Son is all over me to get his rig together as he's getting mine and I'm upgrading.. pretty much a while new rig for myself and his first! Can't wait to game online side by side!

I may be returning my ftw cards but evga will always be ftw in my book!

Keep rocking guys!

This problem is happening with the SC card too. Just started on mine. Interestingly, I've been using the card with no problems since release - the crashing didn't start happening until immediately after I upgraded to 37x drivers. I tried rolling back (including DDU) to the previously working 368 drivers, but I'm still getting the crashing, so I'm going to have to RMA...

I absolutely have the same situation like you. I've been using 1080 SC for around three month, the crashing problem start happening when I upgraded the driver to 368.81.

Replacement card received from RMA submitted on Sept 7th.

Well, I couldn't find any real physical differences between the original and RMA card other than the different 330uF caps mentioned above. Same PCB revision code by the PCIe, same BIOS version for master and slave.
Old card serial sticker was "Made in China" and replacement is "Packaged in USA."
New card boosts lower (max of 1987, last one did 2025. Constant boost was 1949 before, now it's 1923 or 1911 or something like that. I'm not OCing at all) and considerably more coil whine than the previous card.

I really don't know what to think at this point. I would feel more comfortable if I knew what the actual problem was and I was 100% sure this replacement fixes the issue. I haven't had enough time to test with more games at this point, but I did run Heaven for a few hours and it seemed fine other than the coil whine.

Hi tommyv2, can you try using Precision XOC to overclock it, to see if it can hit 2000+?

I've had many great EVGA products throughout the years, and had excellent previous customer service experiences. I'm disappointed in how this issue is being kept quiet, in my opinion this is not being loyal to your customers. I understand mistakes can be made, but not to know the root of the issue, just send it in and it may be fixed with a replacement is terrible. Unlike my previous experiences, this time around I did not attempt to RMA the card, I returned it and went with another vendor over lack of transparency. This is highly unfortunate and hope this changes in the future.
