Information in that thread might explain the situation http://forums.evga.com/ba...1070-FTW-m2565921.aspx

This could be it. Maybe some cards are missing thermal pads on the memory or vrms?

If anyone has one of those micro accurate scales. You could always test the weight difference from your faulty card and a replacement.

I deeply regret buying the 1080 Hybrid. Since I got the card I wasn't able to play anything properly in fear of crashing again. And that was at least two months ago. On friday Battlefield 1 is being released and I can't play it at all.

LOL wait.. your post makes little sense to me the way it is worded - it sounds like you purchased the card but have never used it for gaming because you're scared it *might* crash?? That is crazy. If you purchased the card and you *did* get the black screen full fan speed issue, did you ask for an RMA to replace it, or just stopped playing games?  ..which is still crazy. OR, did you get a replacement via RMA, but have not gamed with the replacement card because ...you're scared it *might* crash? LOL sorry this just isn't making any sense, I hope I am just misunderstanding your post.

You are misunderstanding my post. I got the black screen several times during gaming. I then stopped playing because of that issue. I then requested a RMA which took some time. The replacement card also got me the black screen several times. I stopped playing again. Now I'm waiting for my third card...

Do me a favor... turn debug mode on and see if you still get the black screens.

You have my sympathy. It is bad enough to have to replace an expensive graphics card once due to a defect but twice? That is just shocking. I really hope that doesn't happen to me as well because it would almost certainly put me off buying EVGA cards in future.

Of course, when I get my new card (today... hopefully) then I will be testing it thoroughly at stock speeds and with the mild overclock I've been using for the last two months (+50 MHz core, +250 MHz VRAM) using the default fan profile since this is when the black screen issue is more likely to occur. However, I've found that my current (supposedly defective) card has been running fine for the last five days without a single black screen issue when using a custom fan profile in MSI Afterburner. I personally believe that this is helping cool the hot parts of the PCB and reducing the likelihood of getting a black screen. The only real difference between the default and custom profile is that the latter spins the fans all the time (a base of 40%) whereas the one the card ships with only turns them on about 65 C. I initially used a custom profile when I first got my card and it was stable. I then switched to the default one about a month ago and started getting black screens about a week or two later. I am now using the custom profile again and the black screens have gone.

It's maybe not 100% conclusive since the issue even when it happened seemed completely random (it could happen 5 minutes or 3 hours into playing a game or not at all) but it does seem to make a difference to the stability of the card on my system. Until I got this card I have pretty much always used custom fan profiles with reference NVIDIA cards to keep the temperatures below 75 C. This is what helped me avoid the infamous 0% fan issue of one of NVIDIA's drivers about 5 or 6 years ago.

I was planning on doing that. I maybe will also take some thermal images as well if I get the chance.

I have the Hybrid and I thought that the cooling would be sufficient for the VRMs. But looking at the cooler I don't think so. The is no heat sinking on the chokes, just a fan blowing over them. Not sure if this is enough. I had my fan on the card always blowing with 80%. Didn't make any difference.

My RMA card was shipped on September 9th. I'm not going to post my full serial, how do I find out what factory produced it?

My replacement card was just delivered by UPS about 20 minutes ago so I am very much looking forward to putting this one through its paces and finding out if it really is free of the black screen issue (after reading the posts on here I am less than hopeful). Wish me luck...

I also need to send the original one back as quickly as possible so I can get my collateral payment refunded.

It's the two numbers after 161 at the beginning of the serial.
