Hey! Just got my Evga Gtx 1080 FTW and I am currently installing it. I am a bit confused if I should use 2 separate 8 to 8+6 pin connectors from the power supply to the card or if I should use one 8 to 6+8 connector along with the adaptor that I got with the card.

I got the message "Power system down and connect power to the graphics card." when I just used one 8 pin cable from Power Supply to Graphics Card.

Should I use two power cables from power supply to graphics card? Does it really need that much power?

I tried using just one "8 pin to 8+6 pin"-cable to the card where I used the converter on 6 pin to convert it to 8 pin and then connected both to the card and this worked when I started the computer. Using the same cable but not the converter and instead plugging in 6 pin into one of the 8 pin slots did not work.

I have a EVGA 650 G2 power supply.

Thanks for all your help!

Yes, use two separate 6+2 pin connectors.

Don't use the supplied adaptors that come with the card. use the connectors that are on the PSU,

here is a tip, plug in the 2 pin connectors first, and make sure they are the right way around, (the smooth side touches the 6 pin connector) as the 6 pin connector will only go in 1 way.

Yeah, I'm a bit surprised that it needs 2x8 pins, considering the MSI gamer X needs 1x6 and 1x8 .

Awesome, thanks for that. Does it matter if I put the 8 pin in the graphics card or if I put the 6+2 in the graphics card? Any difference?

No, they both are fine to use  (edit misread the OP statement)  If one cable has 8 Pins on one side and 6+2 on the other side; the 8-pin goes into the PSU.

Welcome to the forums pellewisten! I'd like to clarify one thing Cool GTX said. I'd recommend using the 6+2 connector, as the other end is intended to plug into the power supply and the 2 ends are electrically different.

Just plug in any 6+2 or 8-pin into the GPU. 6+2 = 8-pin
Only make sure you dont use the CPU 8-pin on the GPU.
It doesn't matter if you use a single "skein" from the PSU which contains two PCIe GPU plugs or two "skeins".

Correct Two cables, one for each of the GPU's plugs is best.

You MUST populate all of the GPU power plugs - leave non-open
