So I received my evga gtx 1080 ftw two days ago and had instant issues. I installed it in an Alienware graphics amplifier for my 17r3 with a gtx 980m. I tried playing Doom, GTA 5 and, Rise of the Tomb Raider and was getting crashes when loading and getting single digit fps when I could get the games to load. I completely removed all traces of NVIDEA on my PC and did a clean install. I still had the same issues. I called NVIDEA, DELL, and EVGA and spent most of my day yesterday on the phone trying different things with no success. Then I read your post this morning about checking the debug mode in the Nvidea control panel. That seemed to do the trick and I am now getting double the fps as I was on my 980m and no more crashes. My only concern is that after checking the debug mode it stays greyed out and I can't uncheck it. The card seems to be working well now so I am not sure I need to uncheck it but I also know it is now no longer overclocked. Do you have any idea how to get the debug mode unchecked? I was thinking about downloading the EVGA precision XOC software to play with some settings but maybe I should just leave it as is?
I haven't used an amplifier before, so that might introduce specific issues. But assuming it works as intended, debug mode means you are running at core clocks and your card may be unstable at the factory overclock. You may want to look at an RMA with eVGA or return it locally (if that is an option) and get another FTW.
Call eVGA with the debug stable result and see what is said.
