thanks for your quick reply! oh yeah I totally forgot about the links.  it'd be nice if it showed no link in the preview.     www(.)galax(.)net/US/980ti_v.html

Don't worry, my phone changes what I type, if you couldn't tell, lol.

That is a reference pcb from Nvidia, so any Titan X block (or 980ti branded) will fit it perfectly :-)

that is what I needed to know!  thank you!

one more question, sorry!  I found this article stating that EK's 780ti blocks are compatable with the 980 and titan x
so since I'm using a 980 now and upgrading to a 980ti, would I be able to use any 780ti waterblock or even just EK's 780ti waterblock?  seems like people are discounting them everywhere and they can be found quite a bit cheaper than 980ti/titan x blocks

For the block compatibility, Scarlet-Tech already gave you the right information

But regarding your last question, it's not what it was intended to state.  What it really means is that the terminal port where your inlet and outlet are located, are at the same place then it was on a 980 or 780Ti block.  Meaning that if you upgrade your 780Ti to a 980Ti, you won't have to change your tube length or anything else in your loop except your new GPU block.

I have not heard the the reference 780ti Waterblock would fit the 980ti or Titan X. I would wait for verification from EK on that one. Also, that article is from before the Titan X ever launched, meaning it was never verified to be true from them. I don't want to give you bad information though, so I would wait for EK.

Looks like Luc already answered while I was reading and trying to verify the information.

That is what I figured about the first mention about their compatibility, but then in the second to last paragraph the author states

"It is fantastic to see EK design their Titan X waterblock with a little more wiggle room than usual, with the ability to use it on your existing GTX 980 and GTX 780Ti GPUs, so users will be able to use it on their existing GPU as they save up for the upgrade or just simply want to pretend that they have a Titan X when showing off their rigs to friends or at a LAN event. "

and that confuses me.  I know it is only one man's writing but it caught my attention.

you guys are awesome!  I think I'll just get a 980ti block and play it safe.  I did have one other idea bouncing around in my head.  I was thinking of getting a universal gpu block (EK supremacy) to see if I could install it on top of the midplate of my 980ti and mod the shroud of the card to run 50mm (whatever length needed, probably more like 25mm) extensions outside to compression fittings.  Basically similar to the hybrid setup except running to a custom loop.  Any thoughts on this?

You could definitely try it, but I wouldn't honestly suggest it because you will never be able to RMA your card if you have to modify any existing parts to make it work.

I am not sure how Galax is with their warranties, as the only cards I owned from them did not need to be sent in for RMA.

I have a tendency to be hard on warranties as it is!  I was thinking of using my 980 shroud since it's warranty is up sooner plus it looks so much nicer.  When I have everything in my hands in a couple weeks I'll post some pictures

Thanks again for your help!

If you have a spare shroud... Butcher away :-D I would just hate to see a $650 paperweight when a full cover block avoids that situation.

Also, the thermosphere is a neat little block. Let me know what you think of it.

the thermosphere definitely got my attention!  but for me it kind of falls between the full block and something like the supremacy that I could possibly use my existing vrm/vram cooling without overly extensive mods.  I went a head and ordered a few things including a ek supremacy gpu block that will get used with one of the shrouds.  Needless to say I cannot wait!
