I think you are still using FAHClient v7.3.6 (or older). I had the same problem and message as you a few weeks ago and decided to upgrade to the new version v7.4.4, which has the ability to contact the second Assignment Server (AS) when you can not connect to the first AS. After that upgrade it failed to connect to the first AS, but could get an assignment from the second AS.
I've just looked through my logs and noticed the same happend yesterday on one of my folding rigs... failed to connect to the first AS, but got an assigment from the second AS.
I use FAHClient v7.3.6 because it works best for how I fold at least on my 4P and 2P Rigs.
My 2P got the same error but after a while it downloaded a new Task.
I have two 7.4.4 and have issues with them and run only on Windows for now.
On the above error I restart my computer and that seems to clear it up.
My AMD Rig has a few yesterday but cleared up after an hour or so and this is using 7.4.4
