A Foxconn factory’s workforce today shrunk from 110,000 employees down to 50,000, according to a report from the South China Morning Post. Why? Because robots can do the same job.     Link

Meh, after seeing what the next iPhone is supposed to look like I think I have purchased my last one anyway. It's still sad to see so many people lose their jobs to robots. They should pass a law that requires each robot to have a team of the employees it replaced to oversee its operation and perform maintenance on it. That'll show them who's boss.

Its been discussed countless times, many jobs easilly be replaced with robots. If we go down this path we must think of a new way of living. You can't have 60% of the workforce laid off because robots due the jobs better and cheaper.

I think the point was instead of jobs coming back to the united states, they will be replacing china workers with robots. So with this being said, why would the company(s) want to bother bringing the jobs back to America when they can replace the china workers with robots and save even more and more money?

This is exactly what will happen in America. It's coming folks, just a matter of time.

I can picture this happening at the Ford Chicago Assembly, or the GM plant in Lansing, MI, employees replaced by robots. Fallout 4 is coming

Robots are much better at welding, aligning the seams of the doors, hood and trunk lids. The human factor will always be necessary but in some cases a robot is the logical choice.

Im not sure how I feel about this. You will have higher output and less errors with manufacturing however you are putting people out of work.

Going to have to go star trek. Where robots have mostly taken over the workplace except a few jobs. Everyone lives on a living allowance until money becomes worthless. Then you have a resource war over the electricity production.

    That is scary :(

Not scary at all. It could only improve quality control and replace those low knowledge, low pay jobs with higher paying, engineering and maintenance jobs. I'd rather be a Mechatronics Engineer than an assembly line worker any day. Your education needs to keep up with the economy. Adapt or find yourself by the wayside. If you think your education is over when you graduate from high school, get ready for a rude awakening. I'm all for killing off of low skilled labor to automation. It would actually require the world to learn a proper trade skill or education. People should be happy low skill jobs are going away. That means higher pay for specialized knowledge. The people angry and irrational about these sort of changes are either unwilling or just too lazy to adapt to the workforce.

Besides, robots don't get suicidal and jump off roofs of factories for making bad life decisions.

Well if you lose 50% of jobs around the world due to robots I don't see how their could be enough to cover that in skilled jobs you know how governments are these days and CEO's. The other issue is being able to afford a 4 year degree or more and getting a presentable gpa. I left a 2 year program to work at IT call centers some let you work from home :) Than do a lot of overtime for more pay and just get certified later on.

Machines, and mechanical devises have been replacing people for a long time now. The complaint has always been the same. What will these people do now? New work is created. First example that comes to mind is Eli Whitney's original cotton gin.

Once they start taxing the robots the politicians won't care and the people can't do anything because robots also control the polls.

The cotton gin didnt get rid.of all jobs it was still very labour intensive as you needed 1 person per gin. We are seeing robots replace humans at a unprecedented pace. If you have a factory of 1000 people you replace with 1000 robots and maybe 100 techs to maintain the robots you just killed 90% jobs. What do 900 people do that are skilled line workers? You cant have everyone being engineers, tech, and doctors. So you have to reduce population, thus decreasing the need for manufactuaring also and a downward spiral. The other option is tax company so everyone is on wellfare. This wont happen right away but curious as what will happen in 50 years.

There is a shortage of skilled techs in the HVAC and plumbing industry.
We are not teaching these trades like we should be in high school. They cant send those jobs to China or use robots. Maybe robots where they make the A/C unit it self, but it still takes humans to go from job to job to install and repair. Electric, HVAC, framer, finish carpenter.... are still good jobs today and pay well too.

I did hear from a plumber guy that was working on my friends house that said they hire people and give them 2 weeks training and a signing bonus in stuff but it can get very messy lol.

2 more companies, Adidas and Nike, that left Germany and the US (in the 90's I believe) are coming back to Germany and maybe the US but robots will be the workers.

Entry level jobs that were offered by companies like McDonalds and Wendy's are moving to kiosks essentially limiting that workforce. The service work sector will probably be the least affected at this time.

It would also create more, higher paying jobs. People need to fix and maintain the machines, program the machines, engineer new machines, the list goes on...

It would also create more, higher paying jobs. People need to fix and maintain the machines, program the machines, engineer new machines, the list goes on...

Some people being replaced just don't have the intelligence necessary to be trained for these positions.

It may create higher paying jobs in general but those types of jobs are only a handful when compared to the number of jobs that were replaced by those robots.

Agreed. Further, those that do will probably see a few job openings in the service portion aspect considering that those robots are better built today than those of yesterday.

Based on a former McDonalds CEO, it would appear that these robots are getting cheaper. He estimated one robot at 35K. Then there is the life span of said unit.

You have far way, way, way, more people who are just straight lazy, and do not give one iliag thing about this planet, about you, about the economy, and are here to take your money to pay for their rent through the government (good luck with that), and these people exist far more, and outweigh, those who have degrees to take those kind of positions, and there is nothing you can do about these kind of people. Chicago, Detroit, they're all over. Millions of those people exist. How you going to give them those kind of jobs? Let's say they do get that degree... where is the guarantee there will be those jobs for them if you are already in line for it? That's basically their mentality, "so screw it".
