hi i got a question did i permanantly mess up completely

i have a backplate so i removed the foam off the gtx 480 which failed horribly now theres still some fom left on it i barely touched the pcb BUT i did touch it with my nails when i tryed removing the foam

basically the foam strip is half broken theres glue or whatever it is left from it

did i permanantly break my card i am scared how do i get rid of the rest of the foam and the glue left on the pcb

i did wash my hands carefully before even getting near the card

i am very scared

i tryed putting the plastic the box came in on my finger and try with my nails which seems to be even worse as im not sure if that plastic is safe to use it has been laying in my bed aswell

will i notice if the card has been damaged for example not working at all or will the performance decrease which is even more horrible please help me

If you have a hairdryer, you can heat up the glue/foam and remove the remainder. Personally, I'd use an old, clean dishrag to soak up the glue (less fuzzies than a napkin or paper towel). Now, I assume the glue is non-conductive, but I would still try not to wipe it over anything else but the line it was laid out in on the back of the card.

Now as to touching your video card?

    1. Don't do this while standing on carpet. Stand on tile or cement, as those materials build up less of an electric charge on you as you move around. Don't wear shoes or socks.

    2. If you can, stand near a metal faucet that you can touch. This will remove any electric charge you build up as you move around while working on your video card.

    3. Relax! Take your time and carefully re-assemble your card. Pop it back in and see if it works.

EDIT: Usually if you touch a sensitive electronic device, like a video card, and you feel a shock/zap of electricity...Well, 2 things normally happen. First, the card could be completely dead depending on where the electric charge went. Secondly, it may just weaken components on the card and may cause an early failure (could be days, weeks, months, years). If you didn't feel a zap when you touched your card, and weren't standing on carpet when you installed your backplate, then I wouldn't worry much about it.

If it makes you feel better, using the method I described above, I handled THREE GTX 480s and their PCBs while replacing thermal paste on the GPU dies.

EDIT: "sat in my bed card on the box that it came in on the anti static bag" zzcool. Not a great idea, but at least you had it on the anti-static packaging. The foam/glue should be removed to help airflow/heat dissipation. Using the method described above you will be fine. If you didn't feel a zap/see a spark when your fingernail got close, your card should be fine.

    Howdy,

You're fine.  I had a lot of trouble getting that plastic strip off myself, but it needs to come off if you want to get that backplate on there.

If you can't see any damange, then I woulnd't worry.

i would not worry unless you scratched a connection or popped off a capacitor otherwise you can touch all you want.  a finger nail is NOT going to ruin a card

Once you've removed the rest of the foam using the methods described above, install the card. When you install it, make sure you touch your power supply or a piece of your case if it is metal BEFORE you take the card out/off of the ESD bag.

You should be fine. Like I said, relax and finish up. Take your time, believe me - taking your time/patience with high cost items is better than panicking and messing something up worse.

When you are done, I highly recommend reading up on ESD (ElectroStatic Discharge) awareness. Google it, or use this link: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=esd+awareness

"the sli connector was the only thing my skin touched (small part of my finger) and i felt nothing" -zzcool.  You should be fine, then.

"can something like that be scratched thru the bag" -zzcool. The PCB is just a board that has the ends of resistors, capacitors, etc. Essentially, it protects just like the top half of the card's plastic shroud. To be honest, unless you are pushing down hard enough to bend/flex the PCB, you aren't going to damage it by scratching with your fingernails.

You could alway ask a friend, or a friend of a friend who may let you test out the card in their computer.

However, you should be fine! In the future, just take some precautions like I've already mentioned.

Yea, I did this to two 480s and I learned about the hairdryer AFTER I got about 1/2 the first card's foam off, lol.  With a hairdryer, the second one came off no problems.  I even took the second foam part and stuck it over the remnants of the foam on the first card, heated it with a hairdryer to HOT, then it came off (not easily, but it eventually did, lol).

Ah, I also had this same issue on one of my screws on one of the cards.  It's as if you are turning it and it is doing nothing right?  To me it seems like the screw isn't long enough for the threads in that particular hole.  I don't remember what I used, but I basically put LIGHT pressure on the underside of the screw head and unscrewed at the same time and it came right out.

Note:  When putting the longer screw in with the backplate on, you may need to put a little bit more pressure than the others depending on where it is.  Mine was one of the four next to the GPU so I had to install the first three screws so the thermal pad was compressed down more so the screw could find the threads.

At this point, I'd call EVGA.  They walked me through it on the phone and it all worked out well!

No, the screws were not stripped.  Still not sure why I had the issue in the first place.

If you're so worried about touching it, put on a grounding strap at least. Then you don't run the risk of zapping your card.

Get a grounding strap...you can make one with a piece of wire long enough to reach the radiator closest to where your working. Lay the card on the antistatic bag. Use the same hair dryer to heat the area around the stuck screws. As the card warms and expands the screws will loosen. Hopefully you haven't stripped the heads and can still get a bite with a screwdriver.

i can get a bite with the screw driver but in the opposite direction

makes you think what was the point on cheaping out on screws on this type of card

and yes i am not the only one having this problem google gtx 480 stripped screw and you'll see this pisses me off alot as i touched the card with my finger but it makes me sad more then angry

just for fun i tryed unscrewing a identical screw on the other side completely identical worked like a charm but those 2 they can't be unscrewed

No you're not, just call EVGA and they will work with you to get the backplate on there, just like I did.

I'd try purchasing a good screwdriver set. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16899263004 is the one I use, and it works fantastically.

You can remove screws with stripped heads - usually a flat head that fits will do the trick. Unfortunately, it requires quite a bit of pressure exerted downwards to remove them. You have to be careful, or find someone that is comfortable doing it.

I'd also contact EVGA to see if they can send replacements screws.

You can touch the card all you want, I got most of the dust off the back of my 9800 with my fingers (not washed). And as for static. I have my old antec 300 just sitting on the carpet, never had an issue. Winter time is when you should worried more about static.
