I can't be much more help. I'm not a Linux guy. I just know where a few places to point. If you are having trouble with our setups, I would encourage you to post in those threads as the ones whom work on them typically keep a close eye on them.

Some of the fellas at HardOCP are particularly gifted in squeezing the last ounce of performance from equipment in DC-land.  From what I read, the [H] optimized client for Crunching would best suit a 2P or 4P (multi-socket) environment where CPUs are not always used at 100% capacity.  For a single processor system, I'd think your choice of a Linux distro (I've always liked "Mint") is about all you need to install.  Because Linux is cost-free, it certainly makes a great computing choice when a person is running multiple rigs for DC work.  It is low in "OS overhead" which makes it a good choice too.

With the Grub error are you using a USB hard drive?

this install was going on my h8qme 4p but i went with reg unbuntu installation, i'm still not happy with it because its so laggy and un responsive, i am thinking of reverting back to 12.xx and see if that helps. The dc app install i got stuck on i installed it directly to a 80g HDD. Everything seemed to go well but all i get is a grub prompt, either there is no gui with the app or i jacked up the installation. The only reason for the app install was for boinc and to squeeze a lil bit more outta the 4p. ty for all yalls help i gonna keep tinkerin at it for sure.

Generally with a Grub error, it's because Linux has a difficult time determining if a USB drive is bootable (but not so with USB memory sticks).  A standard SATA drive worked for my problems.

The laggy seems normal for me, it's a lot to do with the video card or lack there of (think bottom line).  A better card resolves a lot of the problems.

Here's a discussion right here within our Crunching team that may be of some help.  For me, installing BOINC from within Ubuntu's "Package Manager" was always problematic until I found the workaround that I posted within that thread (linked below).  Then, our own Bcavnaugh shared the easiest way that I've seen to upgrade BOINC (from within Ubuntu) later in the thread.  I have Crunched using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Mint12.  Like Viper related, the on-board graphics of the 4P server mobo is so lame that "graphic lag" is to be expected, but it does work.

Thank all of you for the quick and very helpful responses!!! Ya'll are truly great people to put up with a noob like me. I kinda gave up on the [H] appliance as they seem to be working on an update for the latest version of boinc manager. If when that is avaible i will do it the manuel way described in the first post that cuarc posted. seriously debating dropping the 560 from my i7 into the 4p haha

I use the [H] DC appliance but installed boinc manually to make sure I had the latest version, couldn't get the Ubuntu Software Store thing to work.

    I second the 560 + 4p idea!

That is a sick setup, is that some kinda pci-e extension cable for a gpu miner? Also any leads on where to find those heat sinks, I was gonna do the hyper 212 mod but those look pretty clean!

I think the hyper 212's might work a little better, but those are Supermicro heatsinks I got from Amazon, only because I had a gift card.  USB pci-e extender I got from amazon too.

I had a 560ti sitting lonely in the closet so I put it to work!
