Hey, I was wondering if with this psu, I could run the gtx 980.  I was attracted to the EVGA version because my PSU only has 2x 6pin pci-e connectors, and all the other versions require 6pin+8pin or 8+8 pin.
My psu isn't the newest out there so I was worried I'd have to upgrade even though it meets the minimum requirements of 500w and has the 2x 6pins needed.  Some people on tech forums are saying it would be risky or flat out wouldn't work, but I thought I'd ask the experts here.  Thanks I appreciate your help!

Assuming I got your PSU right, both 12V+ rails carry 22A each which would be more than the required amount for the GPU. The minimum requirement listed is a 500W PSU and the Amps on your 12V+ rail seems fine.

There is a small chance the PSU could fail depending on how it was made and if you had the $50-$80 to buy a 650W PSU then that would be a good investment.

hey, thanks for the response :)

I don't know much about psu's, but from what you said about 12v rails, the chart I posted lists 12v 1 and 12v 2 columns, with max 17A (amps i assume?) for both, not 22A like you're saying.  Am I totally wrong and is that chart to do with something other than what you're mentioning?

    Thx again :)

back in 2007 when this debuted -  http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=35 -  it got high scores for what it is , but in todays demanding PC's  I would be surprised if it lasted it very long after firing up a high demand graphic game putting a load on your card & system.

I am sure it will fire up and run your system for most things but don't be surprised if you get spontaneous shut offs / restarts under stress.

I couldn't see the picture very well and looked the model up and found a similar one with 22A... But if it's 17A, then I would advise buying the EVGA 500B for $50 and a $10 rebate on Newegg you should be fine. But really any Corsair 500W+ with 20A+ on the 12V+ you would be fine. Your PSU might be okay, but 2007(?).... Also I've never seen the seperate ratings for each 12V+ rail and don't know if it's saying there's a total of 17A on them both or if there's 17A on each for a total of 34A. So I would suggest buying a new one.

Its 17A per rail, but you don't combine them to meet the minimum power requirements (specs) for a card.  Each rail (when more than one) should be able to meet (at the very least) or preferably exceed the amps requirements for the card.

I wouldn't risk it.  Buy a better PSU to support and compliment your new card.

Its hard to say what could happen to a PSU that is as old as that one, possibly nothing. Sure it may work but would be a shame to damage a new GPU or the rest of your system if something were to happen. If nothing more than peace of mind, I would upgrade the PSU. You didn't really say whether or not you had already purchased the new 980, but it would also open up more options for you, now and down the road. I know it's overkill but I personally use a PSU that is about twice what my systems wattage calls for. EVGA and Corsair both make excellent PSU's and there are lots of low priced options out there, even in the 850 watt range.

Good luck, and enjoy your new GPU
    I hope this helps.

    Your psu should be able to handle 2983-KR without a problem. Max load for the 12v is 360w, 360/12 = 30amps on the 12v. A 980 is a 165w card, 165/12 = 13.8amps. Hope this helps.

I'm gonna start off by saying you need a new PSU after I saw this...

The PSU that you lookup as the model number is different for some reason (saw that one too). But the PSU he has is a max of 17A which would be fine maybe if it was a 2015 PSU. But the PSU he has was made in 2007 which makes it scary. Just because it's 8 years old I don't think it would behave good being used at 81% usage on the 12V+ rail, and its not even bronze rated so over 80% would be maxing that for safety.  So I would buy a new one to avoid the risk of PSU failure which can be a terrible thing.  I didn't notice that it was 81% usage on the 12V+ rail before and that would be risky, especially on the age of the PSU.  I wouldn't even attempt it unless it was a Platinum rated PSU (maybe). So I would buy a new one to avoid the risk of PSU failure which can be a terrible thing.

Exactly how old is the psu? Just because it was made 2007 doesn't mean he has been using it since then. The OP should also tell us his full system specs including how many case fans he has.
