I built a new rig for witcher 3 @and went with a gtx980 ftw. For the most part, the game has been running fine on mostly ultra with solid frame rates, but I had been getting frequent hard black screen crashes. I swept drivers, ran occt for hours, rolled drivers back... No dice. After reading the experiences of other owners with the same problem, I decided to call EVGA support. They told me to just download the new drivers from EVGA and do a fresh install. I had already done this from Geforce a half dozen times, but I followed their directions. Since downloading the evga drivers, witcher 3 has been an absolute mess. 60 fps is impossible even with all settings on low. Swept the drivers and rolled back to the last nvidia drivers. This didn't help. The game chugs and hangs constantly, regardless of settings. I tested Sleeping Dogs and MKX, which both run fine, and I haven't gotten any hard crashes in the last twelve hours, but witcher 3 has become inexplicably unplayable. Wondering if anyone has any ideas.
thanks.

Did you happen to try the drivers that were related to the drivers which included witcher 3 (at work right now, don't remember driver #)?

353.06 is the most recent (just released) and seems to have more updates for Keplar. For whatever reason, I can say with 100% confidence that I can trace my performance issues to that driver update. I rolled back to 352.86, which was stable for me until I attempted to update. Ever since I updated, performance went through the floor, and even rolling back doesn't seem to help. Considering a fresh install of windows if I can't figure this out

Have you tried doing a "clean install" with the drivers? Click on the clean install, and install just the GPU and physx driver, no hd audio, no 3d vision.

have you had any problems with the driver crashing? Or any crashes in general?

yeah I have. I ran DDU in safe mode to clear all my Nvidia display drivers and started installing components one at a time. The problem persists, but only in Witcher. I get 60fps no problem in Sleeping Dogs and MKX

The only crashes I have been getting are goofy black screen crashes while playing games. Only my 980 does this. Swapping my 670 in leads to no issues. In Witcher 3 especially, even walking over certain textures leads to a black screen crash with 'no device detected' popping on my monitor. Rig stays running, led on the GPU stays lit. One thing to note is that I am on a Sabertooth with the fancy diagnostic LEDs. Every time one of these goofy crashes happens, the motherboard runs through a diagnostic and always lands on the GPU light and stays there

If You haven't already, underclock both core and memory by -105 with afterburner and make sure power limit stays at default.

Should that fix (or not; doesn't really matter) Your black screen issues while playing games, You are officially a member of the screwed up 980FTW series club and either need to RMA the card until You will get a working one (which could take time) or, if You can, step up to a 980ti which would be the preferable solution to this issue.

Edit: If you can send it back to the store You got it from and get Your money back and get either a different model or a different card that would be perfect.

As much as I would love to step up, I spent all I could on this rig and can't afford to upgrade for quite some time. Just got off the phone with EVGA, and they recommended I continuously roll back drivers until the game is playable. The guy on the phone (who was extremely nice, which should be praised) told me this problem has been coming in quite frequently, with the newest drivers essentially poisoning witcher 3 even if you roll back. He said to roll back two or three drivers and the problem should be resolved, according to what he has seen.

as far as returning to the store, I got the card at Fry's. I had an MSI gtx980 before this, which I did return. Unfortunately, the 30 day return policy on this card has expired and I seriously doubt I can get anywhere there

Don't bother i rolled so far back it's not even funny and same thing happened. He might have been polite but his suggestion doesn't help. The black screen issue is not caused by the drivers from nvidia. The issues from them are TDR and total lockup while browsing which are a separate issue entirely.

seems like the card is the issue then. This is so bizarre. Aside from the crashes, the card was performing extremely well in Witcher 3 on the last drivers. The moment I updated, issues started cropping up and the game doesn't run smooth even on low. Now even rolling drivers back does nothing. How does this even happen?

Could just be a coincidence that the card stopped working at the same time you updated the drivers. I dunno!

Just got off the phone with EVGA again. Given everything I have said, the guy said that the likely cause is that I had a card that was faulty but not quite showing it yet, and fiddling with the drivers may have caused it to screw the card up. He recommended I RMA. Thanks for the help, everyone.

If they replace it with another FTW you are most likely to have the same issue.

Mr_slippy Can you list your Computer Hardware and include any other PCIe Cards installed like a Sound Card or Video Capture Card.
When you installed the current driver did you install only the Graphics and PhysX Drivers?
Do you have any monitoring software running in the background like fan controlling software?
But it looks like you are running with an RMA, good luck with your new card.

Funny, i thought the same thing about Your posts. You offer no help and simply state that Your 980FTW is working fine and all is good and/or insult us who have those problems.

    Borderline shilling here.

Edit: Signing every post with Your name is also pretty weird btw.

I've run countless tests in gpu-z and OCCT and nothing else seems to have any issue. I've tested with my 670 ftw and it seems to be okay. It points to the card, unfortunately. Figured going with another FTW-branded card was a good bet, as my 670 has been a great card. After seeing people's experiences on here, that $600+ could have been better used, perhaps

For everyone that is having trouble with the FTW, just keep RMAing 4-5 times (it's going to suck...), and after that 4th RMA, demand a refund or tell them you want a downgrade, then go for SC or reference.
