I found this video interesting....Linus is great at explaining performance parts for the PC.  He demonstrates two GTX 580s at 16x and then at 8x

He will be posting another video later on with two GTX 590's (dual GPU cards) and showing if theres a difference there

EDIT: heres a follow up for Dual GPU Card, Radeon 6990....its not a GTX 590, but it should perform similarly since they are both dual gpu cards

excellent timing, i had a question about this.

do you think 2560x1600 resolution in modern games, with all settings maxed out, plus a moderate amount of super sampling could max out PCI x8 bandwidth for SLI 580s?

that I would not be able to say....but for sure people who run 1920x1200 or 1080 (and most gamers do), 8x bandwidth is still plenty for a 580....who knows if the next gen GPUs will require more bandwidth or not....but its safe to say for now, all graphics cards right now won't see any difference between 8x and 16x at 1080p resolution

i know right?  it got delayed another month...if it gets delayed one more time with an "indefinite" date, i'll be mad!

oh yeah the game better be good!  the storyline can be whatevers...but the action better be fun!

I generally like reviews like this as it puts to rest the overcompensating to PCIe lanes for video cards because what is available isn't using all of the lanes no matter how highly the details are set.

However, I don't like it when some (not all) people use it to justify cheaping out and not plan ahead.  Let's say _____ graphics card doesn't need more than 8 lanes, well that doesn't matter this person even intends to upgrade to a better video card before getting a board with more lanes in the slot.  That's why they should strive for a full 16 lane slot so they don't have to worry about what a video card needs until PCIe 3.0 comes around.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

Well this video pretty much shows that you don't need full 16x 16x for gaming....maybe if you are competing in synthetic benchmarks....but for gaming it would be so minor you can't tell a difference.

I'm pretty happy with my P67 board....I'll be set for this generation of graphics cards....maybe the next gen will require more bandwidth or else it will bottleneck...but currently the 580 and 6990, which are both top tier GPUs, does not require full 16x to see a difference

I've always told everyone this. People just assume 8x will have some major bottleneck. You could even run at 4x and not notice.

why should it matter if it its surround or not surround or for that matter 2560x1600, if you utillize your gpu's 100% as linus shows it shouldent matter if it is 1080 or 1600 or surround. a benchmarks is a benchmark its stresses your gpu's 100% no matter what resolution.

No, it doesn't, the maximum performance difference you will ever experience between x8 and x16 is only 2%, so don't worry about it too much

Thanks for this bit of info. I had heard it was minimal difference but until now I didn't realize how small it was. Now I can look at more MOBO's and get a new build started soon, I hope.

Im happy to see that my old 680i SLI with 2 PCI-E 16X 1.1 slots that equals 2 PCI-E 8X 2.0 gives a good enough bandwith to my cards. If i could only install a QX9650 on my mobo, i could eliminate most of the CPU bootleneck. Although with my CPU, at the resolution i use of 2560 x 1600, i can clearly see great improvement in performance with the use of two cards, vs one card. One thing is clear. The only bootleneck on lower resolutions, come from the CPUs nowadays.

For those of you that haven't seen it, here's a good write-up on PCI-E scalability. http://www.techpowerup.co...Express_Scaling/9.html Having each card on 2.0 lanes is like having fast RAM that adds %2-3 of more performance. It doesn't matter for the most, but that 58 to 62 FPS at 2560X1600 would change something for someone.

I believe every little bit helps. Because I'm on a CRT where a slowdown from 85 to 79 frames is noticeably laggy, since 85 HZ is considered to be the min for smooth visuals on a tube, unless you're a guy with one of these http://www.newegg.com/Sto...al-Performance-Eyewear hah.

at 2560x1600 Blackops max out at 170fps on my dual 580 SLI @8x lane. I could remove the second card and compare this weekend but used to do 90fps (com_maxfps) with 1 GTX 580.. I'm also about to put back some OC on the CPU once I feel my PSU is holding up.  I had put it back at stock speed before adding the second GTX 580.

I did tried to see how much difference i could find so i did a comparison with a 2600K + Asus Maximus IV Extreme (P67) with has one NF200 so it permit 8x/16x/16x Tri SLI.

My test only include 3DMark11 and i passed it in 3 possibilities.
1- 8x/8x (Only using P67 Native PCI Express Controller)
2- 8x/16x (Using P67 Native PCI Express Controller and NF200)
    3- 16x/16x (Using NF200)

    So this are my results:
(All 3 results are with same clocks... 2600K@4.8GHz HT On, SLI GTX580 @ 900/2200)

    8x/16x:

    8x/8x:

    16x/16x:

    Resuming...
    I got X4431 in 16x/16x, X4185 in 8x/16x and X4162 in 8x/8x.

So, my difference from 16x/16x and 8x/8x are more than what Linus says...

If we consider X4162 as 100%...

    4162 - 100%
    4431 - X

    X= 106.463%

Specially, look at the GPU Score...
