To disable the automatic driver installation in Windows 7 all you need to do is go to your start menu and in the "search" box type gpedit.msc then press enter. That will bring up the "Local Group Policy Editor". From in there use the box on the left and navigate to:
Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Driver Installation
Once there, on the box on the right now open "Turn Off Windows update device driver search prompt" and set it to "Enabled" and click OK. Then you will have to restart your PC but now Windows will no longer attempt to auto install drivers for hardware.
Note: This does not disable the updates for Windows like patches or security updates, it only disables the service that auto installs device drivers.
If later you wish to re enable this feature just follow the same steps and instead of the "enabled" box you checked, just click disabled and once again after a reboot Windows will now attempt to install driver automatically.
